I'd get it done by a gearbox specialist, it's not a particularly straightforward job, since the box is supposedly 'sealed for life' and they'll charge you not much more than you'll pay for parts, as you're discovering. It must be the correct oil, and it is very expensive! Done incorrectly it will kill your gearbox, I'd save your spanners for other jobs and sub this one out! But that's just my two penn'orth! ![]() |

Oh yes i agree!!!...i don't really do any DIY on my cars anyway....i was just shocked at the price of oil. To be honest, i don't think ill bother, the gearbox is changing as smooth as a nut and im worried if i start tampering with it it will never be the same. |

Texamatic 7045E can be bought for around £65 for a 20 litre drum |

I disagree - it's an incredibly simple job - drain old oil; remove sump plate bolts & change filter; fill up again; run to correct temperature and check levels - the full details are on this site with photographs ... |

Well we're all entitled to our opinion, however gearboxes are known to sometimes fail after an oil change, and it's not really straightforward (unless it's different on the TD6 box), since the gearbox is not designed to be serviceable (sealed for life). How do you check that you have the right oil level afterwards? Personally for the sake of a little extra money I'd take it to a specialist who has all the appropriate tools, and does them every day, rather than assume that I'll do it spot on and not kill my gearbox! ![]() |

Maybe I'm a member of the "head in the sand" brigade, but unless it's broke, I don't fix it! |

The way I see it when L.R. says sealed for life means untill the warrenty ends. Then your on your own

I am struggling with the same thought, having had issues with automatic gear boxes on two separate cars (granted both GM cars). of which one ended up being resolved relatively cheaply (flushing with diesel cleaned it up nicely and allowed me to use if for a few more years) and the second resulting in a new (reconditioned) gearbox.

Fair enough - it's in the wiki ( http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic1259.html ) so up to each person to decide a) whether it is simple to do and b) whether they feel that they should do it. |

At the back of my mind, I think ZF DO recommend an oil change, it is Land Rover who do not.
