well guys...

i boiled the kettle, made myself a nice cup of tea ....

open the 'bonnet' of my RR ...

started up that V8 (got to love it) ........ squeeallllllll squeaallll Big Cry

poured some water on to the fan belt near the passanger side and all i could here was the rumble of my v8 Razz ... so it looks like the obivously culprit is that my belt is F****D Censored

I will want to work on this RR as much as possible myself and id really apprieciate if someone could point me in the direction of where I can get guidance on changing this myself. I suspect this is a comfortable job to do for a novice, I seen my dad do it on a jaguar v8 before but that was almost a decade ago...

You would be as well changing both belts whilst you're at it. Release the tension on pulley number 5 and slip the belt off, then remove the tension on pulley number 7 and slip the second belt off. Refitting is reversal.

Holly Cow !!! Shocked Does this beast have two belts, I assumed it was one from a different diagram I seen ..

hmmm right i see, yeah I would certainly change both if was doing the work to get to one anyway however how would i even access the pulley's theres no way unless I took the fan out or does everyone generally jack the RR up and work from the bottom ?

Cheers

if you have a squeak, get it sorted. The chances are it is the tensioner pulley or idler puller. Mine was - the bearing was on the way out.

Literally the pulley seized and was worn down to nothing by the fan belt, the belt ended up running on just a steel arm, the pulley had gone - a few more miles and the belt would have frayed, snapped and stranded me.

The squeak is the bearing starting to run dry, it is only a matter of time. A £250 main dealer bill can soon escalate with recovery charges plus the inconvenience.

Could it really still be the pulleys or tensioner. What I dont understand is that if I have poured water on the belt and it stops squeaking then it must be the belt surely? If it actually was the pulleys or tensioner would it not still make a squeal regardless of water or am I wrong?

Cheers

It's not a big job to change the belts, change them first and see if the squeal goes away

Yeah sounds like a plan. I'll change the belts first. Any steps on how to do this?

As above, release the tension and remove the belt. The tensioner will have a bolt at one side which is for releasing the tension, I've not worked on a V8 engine so cannot tell you what size the bolt will be. If you have the space use a 12 point socket on the bolt, if not it will need to be a ring spanner.
