Have you considered that it may just be that the belt is worn? If it has a frayed edge it may be rubbing on something.

When were the belts last replaced? Or as suspected it could be a pulley failing. The pulleys are cheap to replace, the idler pulley on mine disintegrated on the M5 200 miles from home - I wish I'd had it replaced when I first noticed the noise.

Well it diddnt even cross my mind purely on the basis that these belts are meant to last atleast 100k however i have read that some people have changed them well before this limit. could it really be worn ? I am assuming we are talking about the same belt ? the serpentine belt ?

I dont know when the belt was replaced last I have only just bought the car but it was serviced at 60k from land rover main dealer and then smaller oil service was done at a local garage at 64.5k just before i bought it but i dont know much history other than that, it now has 65k on the clock.

thats the thing that is bothering me, i dont want to ignore it, if it can cause me more trouble later. i really wish I could do this type of work myself, even if I had a mechanic friend or a person in the know to help me... lol first time ive had a v8, i love my cars but made the unfortunate career choice of becoming an accountant Censored

My SC developed a squeak which was fixed by a new main drive belt pulley and belt.

Had the same issue at idle but over a month or so it got worse and ended up present all the time, turned out to be the tensioner, got it done and new belt fitted at the same time cost about £200 if i remember rightly.

I had a look at it and it seemed ok. Any proper way of checking it?

I'm on my way home now after another exciting day Yawn

trickle a little water on the belt whilst the engine is idling, if the belt is the problem it will temporarily quieten whilst wet. Do not be tempted to spray with WD40 or similar
