2003 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 V8 Java Black
2010MY on third set of discs/pads!

My mates 2010MY has just eaten its way through 3 sets of discs/pads in the 25k he's driven in it!

The discs constantly warp and tbh brake performance isnt as good as my older 2003 was.

The dealer (Brock) is now claiming that the 22" overfinch wheels (that incidently were supplied with the car as "upgrades" from them when bought brand new) are the cause of the problem and responsible for the brakes overheating and causing the warp!!!

They now will not touch the brakes and refusing to replace the 4th set of discs!!!!!!!!

What are your opinions or anyone any advice ? TDV8 HST Sport **Current**

Personally I would advise getting a nice set of LR 20" Wheels.

I think thats what may happen, Apart from the disc issues they are always needing balancing. Plus the cost of tyres! TDV8 HST Sport **Current**

Seriously that is a hell of a lot of cash.

I've had mine for over 2 years and will change the fronts soon but looking at the receipts they were changed a year before I bought it.

Granted I only do 12000 a year but still!

I cant see how 22" wheels would have any effect on the brakes. But as LR say, any deviation from factory and they are well within their rights to refuse related warranty work.

22" Wheels are just plain wrong IMO - they can get damaged so easily and make for an excessively harsh ride.

I loved the 22' wheels however like you say it compromised ride quality massively and yes they do easily damage on todays crap roads Neutral

I've told him to buy a set of 20' wheels and take it back, personally i cant see how wheels that have the same rolling circ as stock can cause this. I think its an excuse! TDV8 HST Sport **Current**

Just a thought.
Have you considered that there maybe a fault on the braking system on the car causing the brakes to be partially on all the time. This would explain the discs warping thro over-heating and the premature wear of the pads.
I doubt you would ever notice such a fault.
To check for this go for a run when the car is cold, do not use the brakes let the car cruise to a stop and then carefully feel the temperature of the discs. Provided you haven't used the brakes they should be cold. If they remove skin from the end of your finger you may have found the problem. Smile
I don't think the wheels have anything to do with the problem although it does show you shouldn't change anything on the car until the warranty has expired.
Don't ask me where the fault lies as I don't know. Smile

Yeah, as Dan and nicedayforit said the only way a wheel can functionally assist the heat dissipation is via hub to hub contact which would be the same regardless of wheel diameter and to be fair if that cooling were actually required the wheels would be hot every time you used them- in reality they are only hot when a brake has stuck on.

Scotland 

Warped discs are mainly due to heat building up and not dissipating quickly enough. Always when stopped at traffic lights apply the handbrake and remove your foot from the brake pedal to allow the discs to cool down quicker, thus preventing potential hot spots.

LR @ Brock claimed the issue was due to larger wheels not allowing the brakes to cool which tbh when i was told immediately thought was BS! Also seems the opinion here. As mentioned i cant see how wheels that just touch the hub would do this!

Overfinch wont honour any part warranty for parts bought prior to their take over. He was told this when contacting about the wheel centres that corroded. Confused

I'll ask him to try the non braking test and see what happens, And also suggest he has a run out to Hillendale....... Or rings LR customer services to complain! TDV8 HST Sport **Current**
