58 is not always better just a few months newer Smile.

Car reg numbers change twice a year now not just once. second half of the year has a 5 added as a prefix to the year No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Registrations change on 1st March and 1st September.

The March registration is the year i.e. 02, 08, 11 etc
The September registration is 50+the year i.e. 52, 58, etc.

So a February 08 car will be on a 57 as the change to 08 hadn't yet happened.

The reason we use model years here as they are the bit that's important to spec, and registration years can be all over the place, and aren't the same world wide Smile

For example, you could have a 2007 model year car built in late 2006, but registered as a '56 plate - so three different numbers to contend with!

Guernsey

Even DVLA get confused by their own system. Exclamation

RRS first reg in Guernsey 29-09-06 (making it 56 plate)

Went straight to private plate in UK.

When sold transferred private plate and DVLA put 06 plate on it.

Garage when realised contacted DVLA who couldn't care less Rolling Eyes

Be interesting to see if that ever happened with an 06 plate to a 55 plate- would cost the DVLA a couple of hundred a year.

I suppose they don't care because you can always put an older plate on a vehicle, but I bet they would if they'd made it 6 months newer and put on an 07 !
