Dent above rear wheel arch - is this area doubleskinned?

2012 L322

I've managed to dent above the rear wheel arch on the body line and I'm looking for some advice.

I've spoken to someone for PDR and they suggested a body shop because they suspect that area of the body is doubleskinned. Does anyone know if this is the case?

I've tried accesing the panel from behind by removing the taillight insert, but there appears to be sound dampening blocking me.

Can’t actually answer as never done it, but can’t you get to it by taking the wheel arch liner out?

Been a while since I’ve been under mine, so might be wrong….

You should just about be able to access this area from the inside, after removing all the radio / amp / DVD/ telephone etc modules, then the metal frames they mount into. from behind the trim - not too tricky if you’re relatively handy and methodical - take photos of the wiring routing as you go.

It’s a single skin in that area, however there may be foil backed bitumen anti-resonance material stuck on the inside which might hamper any PDR efforts, unless removed. Jonathan

Hi
Have you considered dent devils ? I used them for the small job on my wifes car .
I didnt think they would have any luck but they did a great job
I think its a franchise company so they should have someone near you .

Good Luck

Sounds like that is worth a try thanks. Just spoke to a technician whose done a lot of these before and he reckons it'll be a case of filling and repainting. SoI've nothing to lose by trying.

Looking at the dent, if reasonable access is achieved from the inside, a good PDR technician should be able to get that back to a decent finish Thumbs Up Jonathan

I'm pretty sure it is double skinned, in between is a sound deadening foam which is applied as a sticky backed pad before the outer panel is fitted. this pad then expands in the paint shop oven. So the space is pretty much completely filled in so tricky to remove. I got this from a series of programs showing how cars are made one of which was the new defender.

However if it was me I would cut an access in the inner arch big enough to give enough space to remove the foam and to deal with the dent. Then weld the cut out back in place, you would never know someone has been there.

Its my belief that this foam causes some of the bad rust we get, particularly in the leading edge of the arch, when it gets wet it holds the damp in place until the rust breaks through.

I’ve repaired this area previously on a few L322’s and it’s a single skin. Jonathan

Managed to get behind the dent this afternoon. Luckily it was behind the subwoofer, and I was able to get that out easily enough following this handy video from Sam's Motor & Machine

It's quite hard for me to tell if this is a single skin or not as I'm unable to see the outside of the car when I poke around the inside.

I'm also not easily able to see the crease that's visible on the outside, but it's possible that it hasn't actually pushed through. When you run you finger over it on the outside you can't feel anything, so it could be superficial.

If it is a double-skin, would it potentially be a good idea to cut out a small section of the internal side and then use that for access?

Otherwise, if I'm able to determine that it's single skin I'll see if there are any PDR guys willing to work on it with questionable access.

Unless it's a shadow or something if looks like you can see the dent on the inside. I very much doubt its double skinned and it's already been said it's not by someone who's done repairs in that area. I can confirm it's not double skinned at the rearmost edge / corner, by the tailight on the same panel. I pushed a nasty dent out of there with a portadown very easily ( followed by some hammer & dolly work) and guess the same could work on this one. I'm very interested in the outcome here as I have a rusty arch to repair when I can summons up the courage to pull the electronics out for access!

Looking at the photo I posted the shadow to the left of the dent is the crease, and the more I look at the photos I'm sure it's a single skin as others have said.

I've emailed the photos to someone but they haven't got back to me yet. If I can get a reasonable quote I'd prefer a professional take care of it as I'm not usually patient and delicate enough for this kind of work.

Pretty chuffed it doesn't require filling and repainting!

Any recommendations for DIY tools?

All the PDR people I've contacted have either not got back or recommended someone else that didn't respond.

Tried using a hairdryer and some thin glue sticks but that was pretty pathetic Sad
