No audio, no display.

Hi, 2006 4.2SC. I’ve lost all audio, the touchscreen is completely dead and have this fault via GAP tool. All similar posts and threads seem to be where the display permanently shows the LandRover logo and/or the red power led but mine is completely dead. I’ve checked all the fuses with the radio/headphone symbol in the glove box. For six months or so I’ve had a crack/poping sound from one of the back speakers once or twice just before or shortly after startup and a buzzing sound for short periods from the central dash area, both these noises have stopped. Thinking water ingress in the boot area though looks dry and dusty I haven’t had a proper look down the back or at any connections. Which module is the audio unit, one of those in the boot or behind the screen in the dash?

Thank you,
John.

Follow up. On closer inspection, yes there does seem to be minor water ingress in the boot. Looped the fibre on the Nokia Bluetooth module, no change. Consensus of opinion on other forums it’s probably the amp. Very difficult to see if there was evidence of water damage to the amp in situ and what a pain to remove it. All the other components have to come out and all the wiring looms/connectors pulled out of the way before the bracket with it and the TV tuner are on can come out. No evidence of water damage on any of the connectors and only a small water stain on the top edge. Opened it up and found a couple of very small areas of corrosion so going to get a second hand replacement, am I correct to say better get one out of a Discovery as they’re under the seat and less likely to have had water ingress? Also with everything removed and unplugged, with the ignition on, should one of the fibres from the front be lit?
Thank you, John.

John, I have exactly the same symptoms on mine, no life in the screen and no orange power light and no visible light from the fibre optics either although the buttons do light up when the lights are on, the previous owner changed the amp to no avail, im not sure if that needs coding to the rest of the system now or not? i do have a new touch screen that came with the car as well as the original amp,
i am currently plucking up the courage to take everything out of the boot like you have done and hopefully find something a miss, there is some corrosion to a couple of the boxes so am feeling hopeful,

Varks74, I bought another amp from eBay out of a L320, figuring as they’re under the seat it shouldn’t be water damaged. Have had it for a while, have now got a hybrid TV module too as mine was analog only. Cleaned some rust off a couple of the mounting brackets and painted them last night, going to have a go at refitting all tonight, I’ll post an update when I’m done.

good luck, I will try and find time over the weekend to sort mine out, I have a spare amp and screen, the previous owner changed the amp to no avail, hoping i find something obvious in the rear before having to strip the dash down to get to the touch screen,

@Varks74 Sorry I didn’t get to it the other night, but I have this afternoon. Replacement amp fitted and all is working correctly now. As I changed the tv module to a hybrid one I’ve now got tv as well. No coding or config changes for either module. I’ve fitted a plastic card, is actually a cheap chopping board, pack of three from Tesco, down the back of the modules to deflect any incoming water.

Johnniehec, that's great news, i am tearing my hair out with mine, i presumed that because the previous owner replaced the amp that it wouldn't have been the issue, i may need to take the lot out like you have and start from scratch, i did it the other day but did it all through the hatch, i think i may need to take the whole boot side tray out this time, there is some signs of surface rust on the frames but can't see any corrosion on any of the units,
I wouldn't have thought a faulty amp would have prevented power to the screen, very strange,
did you end up replacing the amp with one from a discover in the end?
Also what hybrid tv module did you get?

Cheers

There was no obvious sign of damage outside the amp, it wasn’t until I opened it I saw three separate small pieces of corrosion amongst the components. The replacement was same model and part number but out of a Disco 3. The TV module is RANGE ROVER L322 007 TV HYBRID MODULE XRA500070, although the part number and label says L322 it’s out of a Sport. I don’t think I could have done it without taking out the left boot well cover support, it has 3x 10mm plastic fixing nuts, there’s a plastic stud through it at the front where the speaker cover trim fits( don’t need to take the speaker trim off, the support will prize from under it after you’ve undone the load securing loop allen bolt and removed the trim up the side of the tailgate. Good luck.

hopefully i won't need to delve into the depths of the rear quarter this time, i am hanging all my hopes on it being the integrated head unit, did a lot of searching on the net yesterday and also managed to scan for the codes to do with the infotainment system, a couple of guys have had exactly the same symptoms and theirs ended up being the IHU,
I found one on ebay that will be here tomorrow, so fingers crossed that sorts the issue, if it does i will then have a logic 7 amp, a touch screen and an entertainment control module for sale lol
I will let you know how it goes,
Update: the IHU arrived today so i have swapped that out and now have power to the screen, what i should have done is checked i had a fibre optic signal from the IHU, as i have the flashing power button on the touch screen but that's it lol
i have checked the fibre optics in the rear, there is no orange light, so i will be taking the IHU out again and see if it is producing the light, i'm hoping it is and it's the cd player that's at fault, as i can just bypass that, i wont use it anyway, the other unit in the front that could be faulty is the new touch screen i fitted last week Big Cry , so may be putting the original back in, time will tell, i believe i am right in thinking that these are the only 3 modules in the MOST system that are at the front, i did see somewhere that there was a module under the passenger seat but i have looked under mine and whatever that module is it doesn't have a fibre optic connection,
So i know what i am up to tomorrow, whipping out the cd player, shame you have to take everything out to get to it really!

Update 2:
I had an hour last night, so dismantled everything in the front (again) made sure i had a fibre optic red light from the new IHU and thankfully i did, winner, i also took the top of the dash out and checked the screen, that was the same, so opted to fit the original back in again, checked the cd player too and that also had the red light, so as far as i know all the front modules are ok,
I checked the input at the rear and didn't have the light, I put a light down the fibre optic from the cd player and had the light, so i am happy that the fibre optic cable isn't broken, so from what i have seen on the web there is an audio control module that sits under the drivers seat on LHD vehicles, i had a look under the passenger seat on mine as its on the left and the module under there doesn't have Fibre optic connections, so my next job is to check under the drivers seat to see if it's there, i found one for £17 on ebay, so fingers crossed that is the issue,
Once that's sorted its just the mirrors to sort lol, it's never ending but i am determined not to let it beat me! (famous last words)
