When you perform the range change from High to Low, does the low range indicator light on the instrument panel flash while the range change is occurring, and then illuminate constantly? Also, do you get a warning chime sound and ‘LOW RANGE’ displayed in the message centre for a few seconds after the change?

I dont know if its related, but we had a 4.4V8 L322 petrol (now a 4.2S/C )and ours was jerky going into (mostly) reverse), , not sure if there were any codes but the opinion was a possible crack or leakage in the valve block. |

The ‘Noise on actuator signal’ error generally means that the potentiometer in the transfer box shift motor is producing an intermittent signal.
The transfer box controller uses this signal/voltage to determine which range the box is in. However, from what you’ve said, the selection of Low Range seems to be working fine, so I don’t think that’s your issue. PaulTyrer is quite right that there’s a weakness in the upper valve block which, if it cracks, leads to higher engine revs being required to get the vehicle to move off the line. However, you would expect the issue to be there in High Range as well as Low Range. https://youtu.be/wUsc-sNFvJU Clearly, in Low Range, the engine speed will be 2.7 times higher and the torque at the wheels will be 2.7 times more. I don’t wish to sound patronising, but are you sure that what you see as “symptoms of clutch slipping” isn’t just a result of the higher rate of engine speed increase, and the jerky behaviour not just a result of the much higher torques generated by a given throttle pedal movement? One thing you could try is manually selecting 2nd or 3rd gear as your starting gear before pulling away from rest, and seeing if it still feels like a clutch is slipping. Only 1st gear is available as the starting gear in High Range, but in Low Range you can pull away in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gears. Also. just to mention by way of reassurance, that the control system on your 5HP24 transmission is highly sensitive to any clutch slip in the transmission. It continuously monitors the input and output speeds and, if there’s the tiniest hint of clutch slip, it will immediately drop the transmission into failsafe mode. Phil |
