Hi,

I'm thinking we could have some form of a 3 dimentional metallic device uniquely coded to that vehicle that does not require any form of elecromagnetic radiation or be subject to over the air interference and potential electronic replication, it could be inserted into a recepticle and assuming the 3 dimentional mechanical coding matched the vehicle it could be turned to initiate the engine.

It could be small enough to carry in your pocket and possibly combined via a connecting ring with other similar devices for other secure devices, perhaps decorated by some form of aesthetic accoutrement, pehaps a combination of metal and leather that has a sentimantal connection with the owner.

Surely in this day and age our top engineers could come up with something along those lines.

Another thing about the Ghost if in service mode. Should it be stolen once you go over 32mph, a 15 minute timer starts & when the car is switched off it will not start again without the code.
However, if during the fifteen minute countdown, the perpetrator stops at a junction or traffic lights and the speed is zero, the 15 minute timer is reset & they get another 15 minutes. So if its stolen in a city there is a very good chance that it will not need the code input. Should it be on a Motorway for example & the 15 mins is exceeded, then when switched off, it needs the code inputted to restart.
As I said previously, I have driven my car for day's in the city without needing to input the code, but I realised that it defeats the reason for having a ghost, so input it every time now

That and that it only needs to get it as far as a recovery wagon or furniture truck or container even (then HIAB onto the back of a flatbed in the container), from there its away to the docks, it doesn't need to move under it's own power for long.

A VHF tracker works in a container its the one to get if you think its going to be dragged into a container etc

VHF tracking works by emitting a radio signal from a device installed in the vehicle. This signal can be picked up by specialised receivers, including those used by police forces across the UK. Unlike GPS signals, which can be blocked or jammed by signal jammers (devices that criminals sometimes use to prevent tracking), VHF signals can cut through these interferences. This means that even if a thief uses a signal jammer, the VHF tracker remains detectable.
When a vehicle equipped with a VHF tracker is stolen, the tracking system activates, and the signal is transmitted. Law enforcement agencies equipped with VHF receivers can then track the vehicle's location, regardless of where it's hidden. This capability is particularly useful in scenarios where the vehicle is concealed in locations designed to block traditional GPS signals, such as underground parking structures or shipping containers.

Does anyone know if the gearbox disable is any less safe than the engine disable? I'd like the remote heating option if I can but not at the expense of security

I pondered on this and eventually thought rightly or wrongly that dont let a tea leaf start the engine, why would you want to do half the job for him? Plus with engine running powered steering etc etc is available. 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

I might see if the timed climate option is available once I get the car, that might help make the decision a no brainer

I had a Ghost2 fitted to my MY 23 Discovery and could do a remote start via the App ok
Once i wanted to be on my way, after entering the car put the code in whilst engine was running in remote mode it allowed gear selection. If you didnt, it killed the engine. 2022 Discovery 5 HSE R-Dynamic D300 Commercial Yulong White

Scotland 2012 Range Rover Westminster TDV8 Fuji White

Hi,

I've noticed a strange quirk on my 2012 Westie L322 in that when I was doing the brakes I had the doors boot, bonnet etc. open & close, back & forth about 20 times over about 8 hours. When I was done the car would not start, just the fateful "click" on pressing the starter button.

I thought flat battery, tried jumping it, rapid charging for an hour, all sorts of things. Eventually was about to give up, so as with most times of acute frustration locked the car with the remote, went in for a cup of tea.

After 10 mins or so, armed with said tea, thought I'll get the GAP tool out see what's what and so unlocked with the remote, put in the ghost code, started right up.

No idea why, searched the forums to see if this was normal, but none the wiser. Conclusion: after standing a long time and multiple triggers it sort of goes into an inhibit mode preventing you from starting it at all regardless of gear selection or not. Locking and unlocking via the remote seems to reset that inhibit mode and returns to normal behavior.

Other than that, only issues I've had was that the immobiliser sometimes, but rarely, kicks in 30 secs after you've driven off for some unknown reason cutting the engine and gliding to a stop, last time right in the middle of Reading centre. Selecting Park, resetting the ignition and rentering the code clears the problem and it goes on as normal. That's happened about 4 times since it was fitted over a year ago now, very odd and can be quite dangerous depending on where you are.
