Sharp crack sound as lower tailgate opens

When I press the lower tailgate button to lower the tailgate there is a crack sound like snapping a piece of rigid platic in two just as it starts to open.

If I manually lift and push the tailgate to close it, then when I press the button to open and drop the tailate down there is no sound.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the replies, I'll have to investigate further to see what to do.

Yep, just a big washer, the biggest you can get and it will live a few more years...

Bikeracer, open the bottom part of the boot then lift up the carpeted trim that covers the gap between car and boot and on the left you will probably find the problem...

Thumbs Up Pete

Thanks, I've had a look and can't see any cracking round the bolt, the noise seems to come from the middle of the drop down boot.

There's what looks like a black plastic cylinder like some kind of actuator, one end is connected to the operating link seen in the pics posted, and also a white plastic pipe going from one side to the other in front of it. There are two plugs fastened to the carpet material on the underside but I could not get them unplugged so as to be able to lift the carpet part clear to get a good look.

Don't think you would need the splits to make the noise, can you open and close the boot while holding the carpeted flap out the way to see what happens....? Pete

I've decided to let my local garage have a look for the problem because they'll have the tools and know what spare parts if any are needed.

Thanks anyway, I'll get it looked at next week and report back on what they find.

Well, thanks again Haylands, and for those following this thread, I can happily confirm that after having added and significantly tightened down the somewhat large aluminium washer the sharp cracking sound is no longer..

Prior to adding the washer I had removed the entire pivot mechanism as well just to confirm that there's no further potential breakages on the pivot itself and happy to say that all still seems ok.. Thumbs Up
