Cabin fumes...again.

Ive read all the previous threads about FBH etc. causing cabin fumes, but mines different.
I drive normally with no problems whatever the temperature , but as soon as I slow to enter my lane, on occasions, I get a fuel/exhaust/burning smell into the cabin. I have talked to my trusty Indy, but he hasnt come across one of these yet. He suggested that if was a relatively short journey, even though it came up to temperature, could it be it be a failed regeneration of the DPF. I admit to not doing a long journey with sustained speeds for a while. Any thoughts. 2013 SDV8 4.4 SE Luxor.

Certainly there's a smell from the exhaust system when a DPF regen is occurring. Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGT's) are raised to 600 degrees C+ and everything to do with the exhaust from the CAT backwards gets very warm indeed.

You would particularly notice it, if driving slowly or stopping mid DPF regeneration - which is sometimes unavoidable of course, especially if you don't know a regen is occurring! You're much less likely to notice any smell from the regen process if doing 70mph on a motorway, as the air flow is removing heat from surrounding components as well as any fumes.

But the smell (to my nose at least) during a DPF regen, is of a very hot exhaust, a 'sulphury' type smell, not diesel exhaust fumes or fuel smells.

If it's actual exhaust fumes you can smell, then it could be a leak in the exhaust system, or worse a leak in the exhaust link / cross over pipe. This can be an issue on the SDV6 engine, with owners complaining of exhaust fumes in the cabin.

I wonder if this could be the cause? I really hope not for your sake, as it's tricky to replace due to its location across the back of the engine. When they fail on Discoveries and RR Sports, it’s a body off job. Not sure will a Full Fat, perhaps someone else has experience?

Although on a more positive note, I've not personally heard of exhaust cross over failure on the SDV8!

Thanks Jon. My car is SDV8. Sounds like the regeneration, my nose identification of smells may not be the best. Laughing 2013 SDV8 4.4 SE Luxor.

I'm not convinced it's regen. I get it when coming to a halt for lights etc in town. I'm pretty sure there's no regen occurring at the time but will plug in my gap and monitor next time.

It's just had a major inspection and service by a very highly regarded Indie and they didn't spot any leaks.

Is there any way of knowing that a regeneration is occurring? 2013 SDV8 4.4 SE Luxor.

What’s the smell like.

I had a hot tar burning oil type smell. It was the Oil cooler. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I would be pointing at the oil cooler or the o rings on the back of it. That’s what was causing similar sounding issues with mine. New cooler and o rings fitted. Problem solved 2016 4.4 diesel

I seem to have this too, but the oil cooler was replaced in March 2023, and the cars only done 16k miles since- it couldn't have failed again could it? 2012 SDV8 Vogue SE

When they did the oil cooler did they do the o rings on the oil feed pipe at the same time? If not it could be those leaking. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Just done my oil cooler end of last month, and the turbo feed pipe Orings just before my warranty expired. Whistle
It was carefully steamed cleaned twice and belly pan cleaned each time, even then it took 2 weeks to burn off the oil that couldn't be accessed very well. Now smell has gone. Thumbs Up 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

If the oil cooler that was the cause, wouldn't I have an oil drip from underneath. My garage floor is clean. 2013 SDV8 4.4 SE Luxor.

The belly pan holds quite a lot of oil before it starts leaking on to the floor, when mine started leaking I could smell it, but not 1 drop, till it really started to leak bad a few weeks later. 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue
