L405 Brake line Failure

Evening Chaps,

In true RR style, never a dull day, another issue that now needs solving, on the motorway this evening on the way home, the brakes all of a sudden felt very spongy, so I gingerly drove home, not fancying spending hours waiting for the RAC, after 30mins, the red triangle of doom, "low brake fluid". So I coasted home using my best engine braking and coasting through junctions without any braking.

Once home and parked up, upon inspection I find a huge puddle of brake fluid under rear off side wheel. Looks to be leaking at point where pipe connects to brake itself.

So looks like it's going to need to be recovered, looks like connection onto brake itself.

Any help or thoughts appreciated.

I assume a bucket of sand on the block paving to soak up the brake fluid and wash any off paint work quickly., should I wash down wheel and tyre?

Yep, that’s fubar.

Hopefully it Could just be the Flexi hose which has gone, which is a nice cheap fix, probably worth going the pads at the same time in case they were contaminated and giving the disk a good clean with brake cleaner to remove any residue.

If it was me I’d give it all a good wash down, as regards the paving, it will fade eventually, give it. Good scrub with some detergent, but it will have soaked in and will leave a mark.

Hope it’s nothing more serious or into the rigid lines. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Evening northernmonkeyjones,

Thanks for the quick response, I am keeping my fingers crossed its a simple fix. thanks for the advice. Nothing like a quick wash down at midnight.

I dont think its the main lines (at least I hope not!) as there is no fluid under the car and further back towards the front if that makes sense when I jacked the suspension up and traced the lines back, it all seems to be around where the line joins the brake unit itself as was weeping directly at that point when I got home .

The joys hey.....

Yup new flexy needed, I would do both sides if I were you.
Hard to say if it’s leaking from the swage or the banjo (swage I think, looking again).
These parts aren’t as cheap as you might think.
Bleeding can be a right PITA, if you’re DIY. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

What's really annoying is that JLR know the flexis are going to fail....

Never, personally, seen this from any other manufacturer....

Optional service item on 6 year service....!!!

Its not uncommon unfortunately as they corrode around the banjo and pipe that runs along the suspension to the body, on the plus side they are easy to do, they come as a kit with two hoses and brake pipe in one. About £70 each ish if memory serves me right. If you DIY it and do both, when bleeding do the N/S first and bleed with the engine running that way you should be ok Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the responses Chaps,

It's a bit beyond my capabilities, so I am waiting for it to be recovered to Indy, hopefully back on the road soon. Next problem will be parts on back order probably!!

Had the same problem at a complete perfect and rust free L405 from 2017 (exept only tank cover), the brake lines are corroded only at the rear axle.

I did my MY2017 preemptively in 2022 when I upgraded to the big brakes all round, the rears were tatty, the fronts passable but whilst it was all in bits, silly not to do the lot, one less thing to worry about. Covered the metal bits in Lanogard grease, and will continue to do so. Why oh why do LR use all those tinny little STEEL brackets and plain black painted screws? Censored “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Just replaced all 4 of mine, weren't completely gone but would not have lasted another winter.

They are a service item, I believe because they are part uncoated steel! Get some water over the wheel barrel and the brake fluid will eat the paint
