4.4 TDV8 Injector Removal

I'm working on a friends 4.4 TDV8 and it looks like I need to remove the injectors from it.

Has anybody got any hands on experience of removing a diesel injector from a 4.4 Diesel?

Looking at the workshop manual, it looks to be a right pain in the backside to do. I'd love to hear from someone who's actually done the job though!

There's a video on YouTube of someone removing them but they've already got all the covers, etc. removed from the engine and they're straight onto the injectors.

Thanks,

I'm guessing nobody has had to replace an injector on the 4.4 then Sad

It doesn't look a fun job going by the manual. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

I could be way off target here, but is this any use? - very little info on the web is seems, the only videos I found were not helpful at all.

Does not look like an easy job, hope all goes well Thumbs Up

Cheers Merchy,

On the 3.6 getting down to the injectors isn't difficult. On the 4.4 it's a totally different ball game unfortunately Sad

I presume you have watched this video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_A4su7rSyU

Seems the same issue on the 3.6, no 4 and 8 no room. If the 4.4 engine mounts are the same as the 3.6 I would suggest try the engine lift after loosening the bolt. If not bash out an indent in the body, it will be covered up afterward by the Battery surround. It looks like a whole lot less involved than on the 3.6.

Wayne is bang on the money, when I had some injector woes last year, we removed all 8 and sent them off to Colchester for inspection and cleaning

https://www.colfuel.co.uk/

Only number 8 was a real pain to remove, and so we had to cut a notch / indent out of the bodywork to remove no 8 in the end, no need for engine lift or anything dramatic like that

When they came back from Colfuel we found out that number 5 had to be replaced, and now she runs perfect !

If you have a blown injector you should get the seat of the injector cut, you will need the right size injector seat cutter to do this, my mechanic used a Laser tools set to do this common job.

at 20 mins and 30 secs into the video you can see the struggle that he is having with injector 8

I've not done the job yet. Removing the covers over the injectors looks to be a horrendous job. There's 7 nuts on them and they look almost invisible from the top. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

On the 3.6 which has issues getting 4&8 out, my indy said they use a ratchet strap and hoik the engine over to the side to give a few mm of wiggle room. Not sure what they attach it to though.

I've done this once when removing a rocker cover for replacement. Constructed a simple slide hammer out of a piece of pipe welded onto a nut with the correct thread for the injector end. They came out pretty easily - way different to those in the supercharged V8 which don't appear to have a thread you can attach with a nut. Good luck.

Kiwi RR, no force is needed to remove the TDV8 injectors, I have not heard of anyone having to use more than a firm twist by hand to get them loose. The issue is no physical room with the back injectors to clear the engine/rocker cover

They did come out easily - I think we went that way as it’s recommended in the FSM - either way it’s not too hard. Pulled the glow plugs the other day as well - was very pleased they came out without a hitch!

I've just done the cam cover gasket on my 3.6 (LH side of engine viewed from drivers seat)

To remove injector 8 I loosened the engine mount bolt (center of the mount, visible by looking down the side of the engine) I didn't remove it all the way but had about 10mm of thread showing on it.

I then positioned my jack underneath the front diff with a block of wood and a piece of high density foam as padding.

Jacked up the on the diff which canted the engine over just enough to remove injector no 8.

I imagine I'd be a very similar process on the 4.4.

Getting the covers off the 3.6 is easy enough but the 4.4 ones look a dog to do as you can't get to the bolts.

Will need to give it another look shortly.
