TDV8 4.4 oil filter housing

When I did my first oil change, about 3 years ago, I noticed something loose inside the oil filter housing.
It turns out that what is called a 'leaf spring' had come off it's mounting point.
I think it is for holding the oil in the filter, during normal use, and when you come to change the filter, it opens up a drain hole, as you unscrew the filter.
I've read on the forum that some people are having the oil light stay on for a while after starting the engine and presume you could have the same fault because the oil will drain from the filter and possibly not get up to full pressure.
I've done three more oil changes since the first and it was still in position but yesterday found it loose in the bottom again. I've had no problem with my oil light so can only presume it's coming loose when unscrewing the filter but it would have been all to easy to have screwed on another filter without noticing.
Sorry if my description is a bit vague but check yours to see if it's in place properly.

It looks to me to be a spring to hold some tension on the tube that fits through the centre of the filter element.

There's a rubber bung on 'the leaf spring' which covers a hole. I think when you undo the filter for a few turns it opens the bung to let the filter drain.

If I remember I'll have a look at next oil change to see if mine springs off the hole, which won't be for a while now having only just changed it recently.

Will check mine and can't see an issue with removing the oil filter part way through an oil service interval. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I was thinking more for the members with oil light problems because they could whip out the oil filter in a few minutes to check.

Mine's oil light goes off immediately on starting but it might not be nice to have an open bleed hole for the next 10K kms...

I clean mine out every 6monthly oil change, but the spring always stays put.
The plastic inner tube is 50/50, half the time it comes out with the filter and half the time I unclip it to clean.

I was missing the plug ( rubber bung ) , so I asked a friend of mine in Miami to get me one, so I can't wait to try it on my oil filter spring, these ones are the new revised updated design which keeps the plug seated better when removing your old oil filter.

As a side note, many Ford 150 owners in the States have been complaining voraciously why this cheap part is not available over the trade counter at their local Ford dealer, they are made in Germany by Mahle, and now Mahle supply just the plug on its own to Ford dealers in America for $12 USD

Ford even issued a TSB for Ford 150 truck owners back in 2022 - TSB 22-2386
Which can be downloaded from this url below
https://www.dieself150forum.com/attachments/the-nub-tsb-pdf.2758/

The Ford part number is ML3Z-6A606-A

https://www.rivercityfordparts.ca/oem-part...ml3z6a606a

Back In 2018 Ford introduced a Power Stroke diesel engine fitted to the F-150 for the first time, this was a 250 hp/440 lb-ft torque 3.0L turbocharged V6 (from the "Lion" lineup of engines shared by PSA Peugeot Citroën and Jaguar Land Rover)

been asked to put up a youtube video - sorry about the bad quality but you get the idea Smile

The hole drains to the breather oil separator which is OK when the engine isn't running but when running the continual flow of oil floods the separator causing oil to be blown out with the air, thereby entering the inlet, so not a great design if the rubber bung moves or deteriorates over time !

because 99 times out of 100 the indy or MD just replaces the whole oil filter/cooler assy at a cost of around £150 and thinks nothing of it, when all that is really needed is a $12 USD part , made by Mahle in Germany for peanuts - crazy world we live in

JLR Part Number LR022895 or LR113200 ( made by Nissens )

NB Volvo XC70, Ford F-150, Land Rover 3.2 diesel engines, RR L405 Sport, RR L494, all have these Ford diesel engines where this stupid design has been used for the oil drain flow when you stop the engine, and the old oil filter can be removed without lots of oil being dripped all over the engine bay, well thats the theory !
