Coolant leak

Classic, just as everything's been smooth sailing with the car recently, I get back to it last night to a red coolant level warning and nothing in the expansion tank Laughing

Topped it up (took about 500ml) and have driven it for 30mins this morning, there's a definite drip of coolant from the bumper/arch liner in front of the OSF wheel.

What's down there? Auxiliary rad?

I'm driving across Europe in 3 weeks so better get cracking.

That's where the aux rad is.
Sure someone on here had the same and it needed the top hose on that radiator nipping up. [ that was on an L322 though]

I had a coolant leak on my RR. It went to 2 garages and neither could solve it,. One wanted to charge me £600 to changes 3 hoses that would not have solved the issue. I finally took it in to a local independent LR specialist and he found it by applying slightly more pressure than normal when pressure testing the system.

There is a plastic pipe runs from the expansion tank across the top of the radiator and leaks where it plugs into the top hose causing a puddle where you explain. If you unclip the two triangular plastic trims either side of the radiator then the plastic trim that goes over the top just lifts off, you can then see the pipe and if its leaking, they are only cheap and easy to change, have changed quite a few now.

Thanks guys. And thanks Dave, I’ll have a poke around tomorrow if I get time.

I’ve driven it about 40 miles today and it hasn’t used any coolant. Weird.

It’s in the local specialist for some front arms on Friday so I’ll ask them to have a look if it’s not that top hose. Save me crawling around on the drive in the wet.

Funny you should mention that, I've got exactly the same on my SV Autobiography, it's the O-Ring has perished on the plastic clip on the left hand side as you're looking at it (Driver's side)

Will get one ordered up. I had visions of a holed radiator or the under S/C coolant pipe!

Cheers all. Formerly happymadison1978

I've got a similar slow leak on my L405. Did you manage to get to the bottom of it? If yes, is there someone you can recommend to fix it? I'm based near Hertfordshire too.

Cheers

It’s in the local specialist at the moment. They called me on Friday to ask where I thought the leak was from as they couldn’t reproduce it Laughing

So no solution yet. The guy I spoke to about it when I dropped the car off said they’ve done quite a few of the aux rads recently though.

They’ve been unable to find a leak. Doesn’t fill me with confidence before I’m about to do a 1,000 mile trip in it…

One thing that came to mind is that it may have only been leaking on days I’ve used the FBH. Is there anything that would make sense there? Certain coolant routes that are only used by the FBH? Seems a bit odd to me if that were the case.

Just had my 2016 fully serviced and had the coolant leak fixed.

Previously it had been fine then got a 'coolant low' message and added 0.5L of coolant. Did a 1400 miles round trip to Europe last week and it didn't lose a drop!! However my Indie did a pressure test and discovered a split coolant pipe. The whole fix requires 3 pipes to be replaced at a cost of c. £500 using LR prices! luckily my man replaced just the joint so only one pipe replaced.
