Range Rover L460 20,000 mile review

Hello all,

20,000 miles passed a few months ago now so here is a roundup of likes and dislikes.

I re-read my 10,000 mile review and many of my feelings then remain true today. But after 2 1/2 years of ownership some things matter more than others.

The 10,000 mile write up is here in case you would like to read it: https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic68316.html

Likes:
- Seeing others on the road. It may seem strange but it is only recently I seem to spot others and it is quite nice seeing what your own car looks like!
- It truly is an any situation car. Driving six of us to London to see a musical, two 10 hour round trips to Wales in four days, weekly runs to the dump - it despatches all with ease. Four of us are off to the Alps in a couple of weeks and I can't wait.
- There is nothing I would swap it for.
- I still love the design.

Things to improve:
- I don’t like the depreciation which seems to have been triggered by a combination of insurance costs and perhaps those flipping early cars leading to oversupply, or at least volatility in pricing. If Land Rover had focused on getting cars to actual customers rather than those who wanted to turn an instant profit we might be in a better place.
- Improve the engineering - a small example but whichever genius thought the approach to installing the roof bars is in any way acceptable to a customer needs firing (you need to go to the dealer and the instructions involving zinc primer and aluminium foil to protect the car's paint are astonishing).
- I noted this before and it continues to irritate - the app has stopped unlocking and locking the car.
- Wind noise continues to distract me - on most journeys I find myself checking all the windows are up.
- I would still like noise cancellation switchable so I can hear what it does. To be honest I doubt the car has it - there is no whisper of anything from the speakers.
- I still want Google maps on my iPhone to show on both screens.
- I tried using Apple Maps which does show on both screens but the viewing options are bizarre.
- Please put back physical climate controls, and the controls by the gear selector - they work great!
- I still want to use the car's cameras for a dashcam.
- The parking cameras look flashy but they don’t really give you a great view of the crucial space between kerb and wheel. More brightness needed and the yellow lines need thinning.
- I still want a spare wheel, even on the 7 seater. In fact especially on the 7 seater because if something goes wrong there could be a lot of people that are inconvenienced.
- The colour choice could be better and more interesting.

Final thoughts:

I have changed the wheels for 21 inch ones. By some miracle the 23s are unmarked and, with lots of trips coming up and plenty of friends and family to share the driving, I thought I would try a smaller wheel. They do soften the handling and improve comfort but only by a bit and not as much as I was expecting.

A few pictures of it being cleaned by a great local chap:

And a picture with the new wheels:

If you have one I'd love to know what you like and dislike, and if you are considering buying one and have questions feel free to ask.

Fred

Very interesting..... Your car looks nice, but I'll stick to my 2021 D300 L405. My dealer has been trying to get me to change but at about £120K for the equivalent L405 spec it's just not worth the wind noise, poor engineering and the other niggles you mention. It sounds like my experience when the 2018 facelift model came out, it had so many silly faults. All LR cars from 1984

Thanks for taking the time to write up.

They're brilliant machines and you get used to them so quickly, you can forget how good they are compared to normal cars.

Passengers love it.

I just find the steering wheel controls flimsy.

Nice write-up Freddy Bear.

I also wonder if noise cancellation is working or not. I agree, having the ability to turn it on/off would show its usefulness. 2024 P550e Autobiography

United Kingdom 2017 Range Rover Autobiography TDV6 Santorini Black

Two weeks in and also love the L460.
I agree on the plasticky feel to the steering wheel controls. My biggest frustration is the lighting control. (Coming from a 2017 L405), which was set and forget. Set permanently to “auto”, during daylight a pull back to flash headlights, also cancels the auto-high beam that would fire up in dark hours. Okay, so it’s no great hardship to push forward to re-select auto-high beam…but why?!
Wireless charging pad is next to useless as even looking at an impending bump in the road, dislodges phone from sweet spot and cancels the charge. Would have been nice if this was magnetic. Again, no big issue, as I prefer my phone on view, so plan to install wireless magnetic charger anchored to rear of screen.
Minor issues though on what is a sublime car to drive, smooth, powerful (P460e) and shut lines very tight, a big leap forward for JLR. L460 460e PHEV AB. Belgravia green.

Wireless car charging is hopeless. Phone overheats and shuts down.

There is too much tech for LR's technology budget ultimately.

I find my Pixel phone overheats too if I use wireless charging.

4WS is immense.

Again, you just get used to it and forget what a difference it makes in carparks etc.

I've had mine just about 2 months and mirror most of the thoughts of the OP

Another irritation is that wireless carplay keeps disconnecting for some reason and does not alway reconnect until the car is restarted. I've taken to using wired carplay and it works perfectly. I've installed a neat little magnetic phone holder that attaches to the smooth empty space next to the gear selector using a motorised suction cup that stays in place over all bumps. The phone is wired into the usb-c connector below the cupholder

With regard to the noise cancellation - I think the speakers for this are in the headrests - turn your head and place your ear directly against the headrest and you'll hear them.

Nice review. I'm coming up to a year in mine and 10k miles. Often find myself wondering about the noise cancellation. As someone else said, if you tilt your head to the side and press your ear against the headrest, you can hear the active cancelling, but like you, I'd prefer to be able to switch it off and on to get a feel for how good it is.

I love the car though. It eats miles and I would not change it for anything.

My biggest issue is the plastic switches on the steering wheel. They really don't fit on a car in this price range, and it's the first button I press when I start the car - to switch off the speed alerts.

I must be unusual in that I don't mind the heating controls being on the screen. I think the pivo pro is superb and even find myself using the LR navigation rather than Apple CarPlay.

I saw a LWB version in the dealer recently and it did make me think about it for next time. Not sure whether you can get them in hybrid form though, and I do like wafting around in silence on my shorter journeys. 2024 Range Rover P550e AB

2016 Range Rover Vogue SDV8 Loire Blue

It is always good to have some balance.
Mine is coming up to 2 years old and 22,000 miles
It is a P530 Autobiography and my 10th Range Rover
I am very close to doing a deal to replace it with a competitors car.
My biggest dislike is the steering wheel, as others have said the buttons are cheap and tacky, they heat it and then stick a lump of uncomfortable metal on it that is freezing in winter, but most of all I find the grove where the 2 leathers join horribly uncomfortable, it is like having your sock rucked up in your shoe.
My dealer was bought out by Vertu between order and delivery and they are just hateful.
The throttle map is non linear and at first was almost undrivable, a SOTA improved things but it is far from perfect.
I chose the executive rear seats to protect residual value (haha) they wreck boot space and usability when folded.
Whilst the pivi pro is definitely an improvement, having to go through 4 screens to adjust the flow on the face level vents is ridiculous and dangerous. How long will it be before a manufacturer is named in a fatal distraction collision.
The lights are bizarre, why does the switch return to the centre position rather than staying on Auto or parking etc. The main beam has too many segments and other than on a totally dark road flickers trying to put light where there is none and not on a sign. They are also offensive to oncoming traffic, at least 1 in 50 flash because they think I have not dipped.

It does look fabulous though. letters not necessarily in the right order

What are you moving onto Dixy?

What position does everyone leave their lights in on indicator stalk?
