Whilst my RR has been in the garage for a new water pump they have found it’s leaking oil from a corroded gearbox cooler pipe.

Has anyone replaced these? Just wondering how big a job this is and if it’s something I could do on the drive?

Just an update on this. My mechanic and myself are struggling to find any pipes in the uk.

I believe the part numbers are: UBP500300 & UBP500380 (two separate pipes)

Does anyone know whether the RR Sport or any jag models use the same pipes?

Will be for a 55 plate 4.2 SC.

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated!

It looks like mine has a leak on at least one of these pipes.

Where did you get them from, what kind of job was it? Did you need any other parts such as washers etc?

Both ends of the pipe look accessible for disconnecting, it’s the bit that squeezes through to the gearbox at the back of the engine that looks tight. Guessing easier to pull out than it is to push the new ones through. '95 VW Corrado VR6

Just bought '06 Range Rover 4.2 Supercharged

I had a garage do it in the end.

I found some 2nd hand lines on eBay but they never arrived so I think he found one for sale in the uk somewhere and the other had to be shipped from Latvia(??) I think it was.

He did say he was worried about getting them out but in the end he said it wasn’t too bad of a job. Just getting the parts was a hassle!

No worries, good to hear it wasn’t as bad as it looked. It does look very tight where they have the heat wrap on them. I couldn’t get my hand in to feel where they went.

I need to get another look. There’s 2 leaking, and when I followed them to see where they went, they seemed to go to 2 different places, one going up into a cooler and one going toward the bottom of the radiator. But I followed them back to being the two pipes for the gearbox. When I look at the parts diagrams both the cooler pipes on those go to the same cooler, obviously. So I think I followed the wrong pipe on one of them! There’s plenty going on round there so it would be easy to get mixed up. '95 VW Corrado VR6

Just bought '06 Range Rover 4.2 Supercharged

Done this job today. I really didn’t enjoy doing the gearbox oil change plus seals, I don’t think I’ll ever do that again I’ll pay someone else, I’m quite clumsy/careless/impatient so for me changing the pipes was at least on a par with that job, but probably easier.

Removal of original pipes.

Undo 10mm bolt on side of gearbox. I removed pipes from side of gearbox first but in hindsight it would’ve been a lot less messy if I then went to the cooler end and allow the pipes to drain inside the box, oil collecting inside rather than on myself. I ended up removing the engine cover, airbox, coolant pipe & moving pas reservoir to one side to get decent access to the cooler side of things. I had the headlights out already which was a big help. What ended up working was long nose pliers with the 90 degree bend on the fitting to push down the clip, plus water pump pliers on the collar and brute force twisting and pushing them off. 19 years stuck on there had got them pretty well on. Lots of swearing, throwing tools about etc. that was probably the worst part. At one point I thought I’d end up needing a new cooler because I was very frustrated & thinking bad thoughts.

Then remove pipes from side of gearbox, you need some leverage as they’re well stuck in too. Big screwdriver or pry bar worked for me as there’s not much room to get your hand in with the shaft in the way Have your oil catcher ready. Leave the pipes to drain. I then gaffer taped the cooler ends as I didn’t want them to drip onto my face. They still did.


Removal was ok. I tried to work the pipes through methodically but resorted to pulling a bit through & bending the steel bit to clear gearbox/subframe etc and I found that easier and more satisfying. Just don’t inadvertently dip them in your oil collector and flick them about like I did.

I tried to pull them toward the front, with the smaller diameter steel bit at the back, thinking that was the logical way. It didn’t work. I pulled them back towards the gearbox. And pushed the new ones back through that way.

Fitting new pipes

Pushing through was a lot easier than expected. Just manipulate the pipes and have hands at the ready to pull through into the engine bay. That part wasn’t anywhere near as bad as I’d expected. I connected the oil cooler ends first, then made sure both pipes sat ok before pushing them into the gearbox. Run some oil around the new o rings first. Tighten up the bolt. Sort out the plastic clips, bit of a pain those were. Job done. Obviously proceed with gearbox oil procedure. Hope fix lasts another 19 years or so. '95 VW Corrado VR6

Thanks for writing it up though. Feel like these are the sort of jobs that will be more common as these cars get to this age

Also worth noting the gearbox took around 7.5 litres until it started coming back out of the fill hole. So if you plan to do this job at the same time as an oil change I'd say it's worth buying more than 7 litres. I bought 9 in total in the end. '95 VW Corrado VR6
