and looked at other posts on youtube from Bens garage and came across some posts looking at diagnostic reader reviews that he has done.

I have been looking at replacing my IID tool as it will not work on my car. Don't ask I've lost interest in getting it to work.

One review caught my interest as it seems that it will do everything and more that I need.

It looks too good to be true and as they say if it looks too good, then...

Has anybody on this forum purchased one?

At £120 I am very tempted to buy anyway, I'll get my money back selling my iid tool.

i think there are cheaper error code clearing devices about...some probably show live values but if you want to adjust settings like suspension etc then the GAP iidtool is the best value... ... - .- -.

The tool I am looking at has the same capabilities as the IID it is a two way device and includes functions like Suspension calibration, brake bleeding key coding etc etc.
It supports any car, the list is quite amazing and includes some brands I've barely heard of.

You do not have to buy a support package unless you choose to get annual updates which my understanding is that when you get your tool the fist job is to install the latest software for all cars. If you don't update your car then you don't need to update the tool.

So it seems that £130 is a no brainer

And that's why I ask the question has any one tried one of these new breeds of diagnostic tool's?

Daft question, have you tried plugging a different diagnostic in to check it’s not a fault with your OBD port?

Seems to be for GM cars? Many other lower-priced tools will do 80% that the iiD tool does, but usually not edit the CCF file, you may not need that, of course. The other thing is, what is the support like?

If you want a tool with liftime updates and USA support, I can recommend the iCarSoft LRV3 which is £150 and can do all the stuff you mention, (I have used the tool and used the support, and a real person does get back to you).

I now use the iiD tool, purely because it was the only tool I could find to edit the CCF file, and allowed me to add Traffic Sign Recognition with Speed Alert to my Vogue, amongst other changes.

As above, before you spend your money, try to contact Pat at GAP, they have the best support out there, even for tools purchased 2nd hand -ask me how I know! “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

sorry for delay in responding, but been doing more research
First a bit of history, but very short.
My IIDTool used to work but was intermittent due to a faulty obd port, this was replaced and my IIDTool stopped working, it has lost the sync signal according to GAP. So I tried various extension cables but none allowed the IID to work. On Gap's own admittance to me the pin diameter is at the very thinnest allowed by the OBD11 specifications. At this point I gave up. All other diag tools I have tried work with no problem including the vary cheapest BT adaptors available online for around £6.

So on to now I have done a lot of research into Thinkcar' Thinkdiag 2 tool. First Thinkcar are a US company with a manufacturing plant in china. They seem well known in the US for their professional diagnostics tools, so I am fairly confident in their ability to provide support. But I may test that before buying.

I already have an Icarsoft i930 tool dedicated to JLR vehicles and am very impressed with it so the option of their LR v3 tool is a possibility, however it is dedicated to JLR vehicles.

As far as I know I will not need to change the CCF so that's not a requirement for me, unless you guys think otherwise of course.

As for the range of cars supported by the Thinkdiag 2, every family car is supported including VW, Vauxhall, Ford, BMW and Mercedes, so its very tempting.

Still researching and looking for other suppliers

Have a look at the Kingbolen ediag code reader, it's close to the IIDTool for under €100.
There is a thread somewhere here about. Reminds me that I said a time ago that I will post my experience with this tool. Well, sorry, had no time yet to play around and test it. I did pluged it in once just to see how it works and did clear my faults.

Kingbolen are a HK based distributer for Thinkcar and also sell branded versions of Thinkcar products.
One of these was dismantled on youtube and found to be identical. The engineer who dismantled it was impressed with the quality of the components used, top quality branded products and not cheap copies.

Thinkcar themselves have very mixed reviews on Trustpilot.

Having said that, I have a Kingbolen battery tester that has been totally reliable for 12 months plus.

Again a big delay from me, sorry.

I contacted Thinkcar a few time with some questions and got reasonably fast responses from them but like most support desks they are too busy to read/answer the question properly. So after giving them a scenario of how I would use the tool (download 5 different brands software to the tool) their response was that Yes I can do that so £120 for all 5. However at the end of the year I would have to pay a licence fee of $99 pa otherwise the tool defaults back to the base OBD2 functions. From what they have said I assume that the $99 covers any number of brands.

I am now undecided, if I only use it for my car then I am better off elsewhere.

One question I have is...
I used my IIDTool to turn off the annoying bleeps if you leave the key in the ignition, but I cannot remember how I did it. Did I edit the CCF?

Hi,

I end up getting a manufacturer specific one generally, I needed the GAP IID tool simply because I wanted to do my own keys and a few customisations but to be honest it's a lot of money for a single brand tool.

However, I bought used and I'll sell if I change car brands so effectively will cost me just the transfer fee.

So thats the GAP IID for Rory, Carly for the Beemer, ODB Eleven for the Audi, a VW specific one for the Golf, a Chinese universal for everything else. Quite a drawfull and they have little used value apart from the GAP.

I did have iCarsoft LR3.0, but that was pretty rubbish but I did manage to sell it for £100, still got burnt to the tune of £75 on that deal, but not a total loss.
