Hi all and apologies if this has already been discussed and answered. Been without a Range Rover for too long now and pondering what to splash out on if the horses come in. What is the consensus, a nice late-ish low mileage L405 V6 diesel (either TD or SD) or an early Ingenuim L405 D300?
Of course the web is full of horror stories regarding crankshafts and or timing chains respectively.

They’re more refined and more economical, with similar performance (well, D350 vs SDV8). Haven’t driven V6 a diesel L405 much, but I’d go for the V8 in preference to the V6 every time.

I've always had V6 3L engines and the latest D300MHEW is brilliant. It's smooth, quick, economical and quiet. At more than £6k under the D350 it's great value and unless I was towing I wouldn't have anything else. All LR cars from 1984

I’ve got the D300 in the disco and it is a lovely smooth engine. Definitely worth looking at, but make sure it’s serviced regularly. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The true mpg(not what the car says!), for the D300 in my car (which is mostly under 20 mile trips), is 30.7. True mpg on long motorway trips is about 38 All LR cars from 1984

What was the car reading for mpg then?

Coming out of a twin turbo X7 40d I was surprised how big the difference with the D300 is - my X7 would get me mid 30s on the school run, whereas the RR I’m lucky to get more than late 20s for the same drive.

Interesting.
I get typically 27-30 mpg from my TDV6 chugging around town, and late 30’s on a cross-country run.
I’m a bit shocked and disappointed that the D300 MHEV gets exactly the same, I would have imagined it would do 10mpg better in all circumstances, and a D300 had been my next possible port of call, so to speak. What’s the point of hybrid, if there are no significant gains in economy?

What about the longevity of the HV batteries, and cost to replace? Nobody seems to factor in EV costs in terms of £ per mile including replacing batteries. I’d like to see a Government mandatory “cost per 100,000 miles” ticket on the windscreen of all new cars.

I suspect if there were, none would be sold. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Is the MY21.5 L405 D300/D350 MHEV? If it is then it's off my list.

Edit: Will they still run with a failed or even n/a HV battery?
and another: 14 Li-ion batteries in a pack so only little, but still an extra fire risk that really only contributes in city driving.

No chance a mild hybrid is going to be much more economical, let alone a third better - the battery is tiny and it never actually runs only on electric.
