Update: LR suggest they cleaned the inlet pipe to the turbo, took it out for a test drive and there is now more oil in the turbo inlet pipe. No idea if that means anything but I know its losing oil - He says its defo the turbo....

<edit> - Having thought about that - if the oil is in the inlet pipe surely it didn't come from the turbo... Its before it reaches said turbo presumably?

He has said the modified filter pipes are all fine...

He then went on to say he can prbabky source a Garett Turbo which will likely be cheaper than a LR branded part..... Not sure he'd be allowed to do that would he?

What modified filter pipes?

Apparently there was a design change fitted from late 2014 models. Twin tubes was it.?

I think they mean the oil drain mod possibly.

A 2016 model would already have a factory-fitted secondary turbo dual drain so they shouldn't be making any reference to that modification. Do they really know what they're doing?

When I first purchased my L322 4.4 tdv8, I had the same restricted performance issue when exceeding 2400 rpm. Having replaced all relevant inlet hoses, and checked that the CSOV valve operated ok, I came to the conclusion that it must be a problem with turbine shut off valve on the left hand turbo ,because no matter how hard I pushed the engine, the left exhaust front pipe was still cold.
The shut of valve, unlike on some turbos is a vacuum operated sliding spool with ports in it. If the turbo is never used, usually by a very elderly driver, as was the case with my vehicle prior to my ownership, i think carbon builds up around the valve and prevents it sliding.
I cured mine, by connecting a hand operated vacuum pump to the vacuum pipe which I disconnected from the valve at the front of the engine. I kept pumping the vacuum as high as it would go, and then quickly released it, I also tapped on the valve with a small hammer. Eventually after a number of attempts at pumping the vacuum and releasing it I could hear a slight clunk as the valve closed.
Needless to say I have never had the restricted performance issue since. As others on the forum have pointed out, it is a good idea to routinely work the engine hard enough to operate the valve to prevent it sticking. There was also quite a bit of oil contamination on the junction of the down pipe to the turbo which has now burned off.

I am 'willing' to have a go but not sure I have the knowledge to do so.. However.... I went to pick the car up today as I 'need it for the weekend'

They charged me for 3 hours labour (bearing in mind they've had the car for 10 days) and 3 days Loan car costs - total bill was £522.

He has also told me that they can source a Garrett Turbo instead of a LR badged one for £1,400 instead of LRs £2,200 - I've asked him to email me the details to think about.

On the way home... about 5 miles from leaving the garage I git the engine management light up on the dash - Plugged in IID and read the following ..



Turned round and went back to them to advise of this new issue - they looked a little baffled. I had a quick google while stood next to them that lead me to the Topix page on the error and showed the 'fitter' - He followed the Topix guidelines and Primed the sytem and then reset as decscribed - reset the codes and it was all ok. I'm not sure how much of a road test they actually did on my car....

Which leads me onto this.. The work they say they carried out.



Maybe I'm wrong but there is no mention of checking / testing the CSOV... no mention of checking any oil drain pipes etc...

The invoice also lists the "mileage in" as 82857 and the 'mileage out' as 82858 - Not sure they did a very long road test given they are on an industrial estate with no dual carriageways close by.

The more I think these things through the more i am set on not taking it back to them... however I am now almost £1,000 down and still no realistic cause of the issue

I have now reminded myself how damn nice the car is to drive and be in though...  Ash

Yes, it's a situation. In the perfect world, 3 garages would diagnose the same issue, correctly and accurately.

On the plus side, if there is one, it is driveable below 2,500 RPM so comports can take it to (yet) another garage should he so wish.

I’ve managed to drive it for 9 months like this after the first let down so it’s not desperate - other than the amount of oil it seems to be getting through now. I’ll try to find a workshop manual to point me to these pipes that may not be seated correctly if the weather warms up a tad. Wondering if I can stick it in extended height in my garage, drop the under tray and see if I can see anything, but jobs like these are so much easier when one has a ramp..!

Ash, Mr Craig is located just off the M5 just south of Gloucester……

So a good trip to the Cotswolds might be in order.

It sounds like yours is doing what the 322s used to do before they introduced the turbo drain mod. 🤷‍♂️

First port of call if it was me, would be to try and free up the sticky secondary turbo actuator to see if it can be made to work again. From memory of the system (on the 322) it’s a solenoid valve and should be at the front of the engine and is the same on 405.

If it the actuator which has failed rather than the valve it’s available as a repair kit LR033284. Which is about £100….

Start with the cheap and work up.

Ash, just undo your filter and have a look at the drain back valve, if only for my sanity.

Again, will take a look and, assuming I can find it, will have a ‘fiddle’ whilst I’m out there.

I suspect the 2 issues are separate but both need fixing. Losing the oil is probably more urgent !
