Help Needed on Engine Choice

Hi all, great site and very informative

I’m looking to get a new 25MY RR AB spec. Our local garage has decent selection of new ones in and offering some good discounts.

I’m torn between the D350 and P400. The latter they are offering much better deals on as engine is being discontinued but wondered if real world there is a better engine choice

I will do say 10-12k a year in this car. I like a nice trip to France or wondering around the countryside. I like a bit of spirited driving too 😂

Is there a right / wrong choice? Anyone with a P400 able to give some real world figures and tank range?

Or should I go D350?!

First world decisions. Smile

If you are only doing 12k a year why not go for v8 p530 or p615

How long are you keeping?

I would definitely try and test drive the petrol, and £20k savings.

I have the p550e, but that was company car tax driven.

I'm in the same boat as Clipper for business tax purposes, so running a P550e.

There probably isn't a bad engine in the range.

Previously I had a D300 SE and I was very pleased with it.

The diesel engine was responsive (mild hybrid) and economical. A D350 would be even more responsive.

I think a low revving, torquey, refined diesel suits the character of the Range Rover and this latest engine is the best diesel they have produced so far.

The petrol will be higher revving as you string out the revs when making progress.

Average mpg will be mid to high 20's in the P400, the D300 gave me mid 40's and sometimes higher.

I also have a P550e for the same reasons as above, but I think the D350 engine is superb and really suits the car. All other things being equal, it's the engine I would choose. 2024 Range Rover P550e AB

You’re lucky to have a local to talk to. Both Harwoods and Sytner have given up in Pulborough and Portsmouth.

And Hendy for me is in the middle of 3 years upheaval on M27.

Hi
I’ve used both engines. The P400 engine is the same as used in the the P460e one of which I used as a loaner for several weeks. On a trip from North Yorkshire to Oban and back I kept the car in ICE mode continuously. The engine was very smooth and quiet and returned 29mpg for the trip. Performance was great although hampered by 250kg of batteries.

My actual vehicle is a D350, the engine in this is also fantastic with more than enough oomph and returns 35mpg. The D350 is not quite as quiet and smooth as the petrol version but so close as to make no difference in use. You’ll have difficulty hearing either engine cruising on a motorway.

I think either will prove to be a fantastic vehicle and your decision will probably come down to the spec and the deal. Sorry not to be more definitive help.

I’ve run a P400 about 15k miles now’s. Motorway journeys will easily see you above 30 mpg (highest I’ve seen in a run to Edinburgh was mid 37mpg although I was being a tad frugal with the pedal.

There is no comparison in my honest opinion between the P400 and diesel variants. The petrol is far more refined especially around town.

Around town I see mid to high 20’s at all times.

Plus you haven’t got to faff about with ad blue which in turns means you get a much larger fuel tank!! Extending range. Something to consider ( approx 600 miles to a tank on the motor way and 450ish town driving only. Hope this helps

Hi all thank you, great responses. TBH, I’ve been looking closer at the P400 and the last comments is music to my ears .

I’m going to drive the P400 and D350 back to back and see what I think.

As a wildcard, the SV are also being heavily discounted and offered out at 1.5% apr, but imagine the depreciation and fuel bill will be hideous .

Had a P400 in the 110 Defender and loved it but beware of the fuel consumption as its not that good unless you believe what the dash shows Exclamation

Also got the D300 Defender now and picking up the new FFRR AB D350 on Friday. Drove the P530 and D350 in a back to back comparison and TBH I think the FFRR suits the D350 engine more than the P530 or the SV P615.

The P400 is now no longer available so might make it difficult to sell on in a few years so seriously consider the D350 even though they might be offering a huge discount on the current P400 stock Thumbs Up "UNDERSTEER" ----is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.

The D300 is perfectly adequate on grunt, & on a decent run achieves 40 mpg …but why settle for adequate? A few quid on petrol/diesel pales into insignificance… you are paying £100,000 plus for the car. I just like diesel and would buy the D350 next time .

Petrol would probably annoy me as it will need more trips to the petrol station… I don’t think I would do the hybrid version…

I’m not against electric driving, as I’ll probably buy a large electric at some point… won’t be RR . Something like a Kia 7 seater or similar..nothing set in stone, will be in addition to the FFRR

Your test drive is the key. Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

I tried the P400 when hunting for my L460, it was ok, but i found the D350 better, i'm no expert, but the D350 really suited the car in my view. The 350 feels very subtle but more than enough power if you put your foot down. Also has a nice 6 cylinder undertone.

The P400 also has the 6 cylinder undertone but slightly more so than the diesel variants but my concern is the torque - HP is fine at 400 but the torque figs are well down on the D350 and the fact LR have dropped the P400 from the range gives me further concern Thumbs Up "UNDERSTEER" ----is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.

You can't go wrong with either tbh, so drive side by side and see which one you prefer. If it's the D350, you then need to decide if it's worth the extra money over the P400.

I suspect you should be able to negotiate a good deal on the P400, which might be appealing.

P530/615 wise, have you checked the servicing, running and insurance costs? 2024 P550e Autobiography
