Again a very dangerous approach but... I pointed ChatGPT at FullFatRR thread https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic35977.html all about oil coolers and gaskets and asked it to identify the steps to replace the cooler and gasket and how long it should take. (it can make stuff up which is a bit dangerous but it said...)

Quote:
Based on discussions on the FullFatRR forum, replacing the oil cooler and its associated gaskets on a Range Rover with a 4.4 TDV8 engine involves a detailed and labor-intensive process. Here's an overview of the process and approximate time needed:

Process Overview
Preparation and Diagnosis:

The engine bay is accessed, and the surrounding components are checked for oil accumulation or leaks in the V of the engine.
Diagnostic steps confirm the source of the leak is the oil cooler or its gaskets.

Component Removal:

The intake manifold must be removed to access the oil cooler. This involves:
Disconnecting hoses, cables, and connectors attached to the intake manifold.
Removing the manifold bolts.
Once the manifold is out, the oil cooler becomes accessible.

Gasket Replacement:

The old oil cooler gaskets are removed and replaced with new ones. Care must be taken to clean the gasket surfaces to ensure a proper seal.
If the oil cooler itself is damaged or excessively worn, it is replaced at this stage.

Reassembly:

The intake manifold is refitted, and all hoses, connectors, and cables are reattached.
The system is checked for leaks, and the engine is run to ensure proper functionality.

Testing and Final Checks:

After reassembly, the cooling and oil systems are bled and refilled.
The vehicle is run to verify that the repair has resolved the issue and there are no remaining leaks.

Time Estimate
Forum discussions suggest the following labor time estimates for this job:

Manifold removal and reassembly: Approximately 3 to 4 hours.
Oil cooler and gasket replacement: 2 to 3 hours, including cleaning and ensuring the proper fit.
Testing and verification: About 1 hour.

Total Time Estimate
The entire process typically takes 6 to 8 hours depending on the mechanic's experience and the vehicle's condition. Factors like stubborn bolts, degraded components, or additional repairs (e.g., replacing adjacent hoses) can extend this timeframe.

Important Notes from the Thread
Many users emphasize replacing the gaskets as a critical part of the job since failing to do so can lead to repeat leaks even if the oil cooler itself is functional.
Some mechanics recommend using OEM gaskets for better reliability.
The job is labor-intensive primarily due to the need to remove the intake manifold, which requires careful handling and reassembly.
This detailed process and time estimate align with industry practices and support any claims regarding labor costs or time allocations for warranty disputes.

so 6 hours is perhaps about right? And it is sensible to replace gaskets.

If you've pointed chatgpt at this forum then the times will be wrong, not many of the quoted times will have been for a mechanic in a fully equipped workshop, more than likely a DIY job on the driveway with a halfords socket set (which is more than upto this job).

The times I quoted are off the factory repair documents, pretty sure there is a link to it on the wiki tab.

They are either Censored or trying to have the warranty companies pants down with the times they are quoting.... Or both Current

It was a Quick destil of the the thread to get a verbal idea.

The garage has quoted as per the screen shot of Haynes professional so there is some justification if u replace the gasket when doing the job.

I think ww has said that while they think [the cooler gasket]‘ these parts are important for the repair of the vehicle’ they won’t cover it which seems perverse. Not sure how they can justify that. --

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

Based on this and your other posts, seems like Warranty Wise aren't doing themselves any favours reputation wise, regardless of the endorsement by Ed China!

Their website quote as being "The UK's best used car warranty plan" doesn't seem to be what you're experiencing with them. 2021 D350 Fifty Edition - Carpathian Grey

WW came back late last night - they seem to love sending a reply at 5pm when it's too late for me to do anything. Delay tactics?

'After having further discussions with our technicians, I can advise that whilst these parts are important for the repair of the vehicle, however, this particular component is not something that can be considered an item that we can assess at this time due to the aforementioned Terms and Conditions.'

I don't understand how they can say these parts are important for the repair but then won't cover them on an approved item (oil cooler) replacement.

I think they're misinterpreting their own terms - indeed they sent me a version of the T&C's which, according to their website aren't the rights ones for my policy. I think they cover the head gasket in an engine because they name that gasket - but I think that means if it fails they will pay to replace - but they wouldn't normally cover another gasket. But, I would argue a gasket which needs replacing to repair a covered item (oil cooler) in a professional manner should be covered. They have now admitted above it's important to the repair. the opinion from the Motor Obudusman seemed to take this view https://www.themotorombudsman.org/case-stu...anty-claim --

What a joke these warranty companys are, this is why i dont have one . It will be pain full to get a big bill but it would be worse if i had given these clowns money and then had to fight them. overfinch modified

Maybe this will be off some help to you. I have a WarrantyWise plan
and I had my oil cooler replaced last April. You will see in the attached images the full cost that my Indy charged and also that WW covered the whole amount (even though they deducted 3 months premium of £270 as excess which is an annoying thing that they do!). Apparently the gasket is included with the Genuine oil cooler and the only thing that I had to pay for was the oil to be changed, plus the £270 up front but of course that was offset against the next 3 months premiums.

hi thanks for sharing.

this is how my repair quote broke down.

From my quote, they are covering the same things they have for you.

    diagnostic charge
    2.2 hours
    406.31 for the cooler

the issue seems to be the 12.06 cooler gasket - which they have said is important for the repair but they won't cover. My first reaction is to say, well, it's only £12, but it seems that to replace it takes 4 hours of labour (see screenshot previously posted) and is an important to do when everything is out. I'm a layman, I don't really have a sense of what's involved but it seemed like it should be done and they agree it's important for the repair.

But this is only one issue they have also refused the aux water pump and heater valve which have both broken.

The garage says the pump is worn out. The policy covered premature failure and they give the example of an alternator which stops creating charge which seems to me very similar to a pump that stops pumping.

That cooler gasket is for the EGR cooler, not the oil cooler. A lot more work. It might be a 'while you're down there' job. 2012 Vogue TDV8 in Aintree green over sand

that would explain the extra time the garage allowed.

i do know they won't cover anything beyond the actual issue. 'while you're there' jobs wouldn't be covered. I think because it's called the cooler gasket as a layperson, I assume is linked to the cooler. --

Which is fair enough IMO. One can't expect a warranty company to pay for something which is not broken.

Or you refuse the 'while you're down there EGR cooler gasket', and the garage just does the oil cooler job. 2012 Vogue TDV8 in Aintree green over sand

just to add an extra dimension, warranty wise have now agreed to pay for all the seals and gaskets as a gesture of goodwill - the grand total of £17. But not the cost of fitting them... --
