Brake discs

At the moment the car is in for its service and fixing the EGT sensor which the warranty have agreed to pay for.

After quoting me an eye watering amount for some discs and pads I’ve said I’ll do them myself. I priced up some genuine discs at Ducky’s and a full set was priced at over £700 for just the discs. 🤣

I know the OE for the back is TRW so will order TRW ones but the front discs are a mystery. I’m sure the ones I fitted last time were stamped Landrover (I could be imagining that….) and obviously the calipers are Brembo. I’ve been through the whole best to fit LR discs argument with myself which I would do but not at the daft prices they’re charging for them.

There are 4 best other options as far as I can see on AUTODOC. TRW, Brembo, Delphi or Jurid plus lots of other cheaper brands. Now in the past it’s been said that Brembo aren’t up to much with their aftermarket stuff or if it’s even made by them….. Jurid, I’ve been impressed with their pads which are LR OEM for the front, TRW which make the rear system and a good chunk of the brakes on all cars and are part of ZF, and Delphi which are generally well regarded.

The indecision is palpable.

Anyone had any recent experience of aftermarket fronts? I’m leaning towards the TRW ones but any input would be good.👍🏻 There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Can't really advise on aftermarket as I've never used them, but for reference, I recently bought 2 genuine front discs (LR016176) for £189.99 delivered. Also picked up genuine pads (LR160069) for £89.99 delivered.

At these prices why go aftermarket?

They quite often pop up on Ebay at these sort of prices.

Are you sure that these prices are for original Land Rover parts? Because original pads seem to be quite expensive...

In the link below, front pads sell for 330 quid

Had a look on bay and nothing is a bargain at the moment just 1 single disc at £70…

I’ve had LR pads for my 322 4.4 and they’ve been Jurid ones and I put Jurid in my 405 30k ago and they’ve were fine. So pads not an issue. 👍🏻 There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Yes, genuine JLR, boxed and brand new, the discs were from Maltings 4x4, the pads I can't remember, I just keep a search active on Ebay and buy whenever some pop up at the right money.

I've got 2 sets of fronts and 3 rear sets of pads to keep by me as I also have a L494.

I checked the discs the other day Stan and there is a bit of life in the fronts, but probably not a whole set of pads worth, rears are on 65k and haven’t ever been done so could do with a swap, though to be honest I can’t tell if I did the discs when I got the car….. they look new on my thread but 🤷‍♂️

To be fair to MD they are saying it’s the rear discs/pads that need to be done, but I know the pads are pretty much ready of the front as I looked when I put the new wheels on and they have done 30k….🛞 so I might as well do the discs while I’m on the job There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Yep. It’s the dilemma. I’m teetering on that narrow fence. And resisting falling off well….. nothing much wrong with the Shiney which a bit of maintenance won’t sort out.

It’s still at stealer at the moment.

I’ve had a read back and it does look like I did all discs and when I got the car at about 37k….. so they are all on about 30k, which is about time for the pads, and will do the discs as well while they are off. For the sake of ££ and my time. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Is it generally regarded as a new disc to 2 sets of pads as long as the disc looks good? 2016 4.4 diesel

I've now seen enough examples of internet "bargains" from sellers you've never heard of just relying on punters buying the cheapest item they can find, that I generally don't bother looking past reputable manufacturers selling direct.
I've been using EBC for brakes for years now, they're not the cheapest but I've always found them to be excellent and they seem to be well regarded.

I have been a specialist engineer working in the brakes industry for 30+ years, so I know what I am talking about, I teach younger engineers about brakes, friction materials and brake applications.

Most of what you hear on the internet really is pure conjecture, as to the differences in quality between OEM and aftermarket alternatives, -you literally have no other way to compare the differences between suppliers than by experimentation, this goes for both discs and friction materials, added to which, there are convincing copies of both OEM products which will withstand the closest visual scrutiny.

Even the vehicle manufacturers are finding their supply chains are often corrupted by bogus products.

You have no chance, no chance at all, other than “buy & try”.

I am not therefore, recommending anything. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

We have tried every type of pad & disc going and we come back to JLR use only as a company.

Surprisingly discs wear and rust at some really alarming rates! We have tried many different brands of discs and again JLR seam to make the best for not rotting away, either inside (many people wont realise how much discs rust on the inside face) or on the bell which looks unsightly very quickly on lots of the competitors poor quality discs!

So, to sum up… In my humble opinion, and i fit them to our own two 405’s! Fit genuine JLR pads & discs and have that piece of mind, you've fitted the best and shouldn’t need to touch them again for the longest time… Thumbs Up

Genuine discs seem to be pretty poor quality, they corrode badly when not used hard - eg older XC90, 11k miles - perfect front discs; newer L405, 11 k miles, inside face in a terrible state. Similar use/storage for both.
