Some good information from a Tribologist .
The viscosity video is interesting explaining how engines with timing chains chew up the polymer additives and I suppose that goes for wet timing belt engines as well .

The importance of priming a new oil filter video shows it takes 5 seconds to get oil pressure with a dry non primed oil filter whereas a primed filter has instant oil pressure .

The video cautioning against various aftermarket oil additives explains how they can actually damage the engine oil and are best avoided .

Good video suggesting the first oil change on a new engine should be done as soon as possible .

Fuel additives are good and have no issues with engine oils

I highlighted the same thing in a recent thread on here. Our 4.4 TDV8 engines have heavy duty timing chains which are crushing our oil at a molecular level reducing its protection property’s. Damn! I better start changing my gearbox and different oil every 3 to 5k also....

How much data do the 3-4k mile oil changers have to SHOW their oil was done?

I assume one of the below statements is true,

Fresh oil retains all of its lubrication and protection properties throughout the manufacturer's specified service interval?

Fresh oil loses some lubrication and protection properties from new but remains within manufactorer spec for recomended service duration.

Fresh oil falls outside of manufacturer spec earlier than specified therefore accelerating engine wear.

If I believe either of the last 2 to be true it costs me £100 to replace my oil and filter earlier than recommended. Considering the cost of our cars and the cost of engine and turbo repairs its a cost i am very happy with.

I get the point about gearboxes but they don't have to deal with fuel or air (oxidisation) contamination like engines do. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Santorini black ivory leather

There is only ONE way to find out what category the fresh oil of your choice falls in.
Step 1: buy the fresh oil you like.
Step 2: take a sample of the fresh oil and send it in to be analyzed (Virgin Oil Analysis / VOA)
Step 2.1: check out BITOG to see if others did the same before you and maybe you can compare your VOA with theirs to see manufacturing differences.
Step 3: Use the rest of your fresh oil in your engine.
Step 4: take a sample after 3-4k miles and send it in to be analyzed (Used Oil Analysis / UOA)
Taking (in-between) samples is an art in itself, one doesn't want to contaminate samples with dirt or the first bit of sludgy oil coming out of the drain.
Step 4.1: check out BITOG again to see if others with similar engines / similar oils posted UOA's and see what they got.
Step 5: compare results of STEP 2 with results of STEP 4

If you are doing very low anual mileage and also lots of short trips then a 2x yearly oil change is likley beneficial but not for the reasons mentioned. Oil temperature takes way longer to get up to to the level it will evapourate off water accumulation from cold start blowby gases than coolant temps and in winter this may not even happen. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I have owned the car 2 years and done circa 11000 miles in total. I will use it more in the next 12 months but doubt I will cover more than 6 to 7000 miles max. I avoid very short journeys and if I go on a short journey I usually take it for a dtive afterwards to get it up to temperature. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Santorini black ivory leather
