Hi folks .... any help would be much appreciated as I've got no more hair to pull out

So I recently renewed the fuel filter for a genuine RR part (so I thought) I did notice that that the water separator at the bottom didn't screw in exactly flush with the bottom of the filter but I thought I'd give it a go anyway. To cut a long story short (several refits) I had fuel leaking from the water separator outlet.
I concluded that the filter was a "repo" so I binned it and bought a Mahle

Mahle duly fitted and problem solved .... no leak

Until now, 3 weeks later I've started with a diesel leak again. Perfectly dry at the top of the filter but now the drip has returned from the outlet at the bottom of the filter.

i'm finding it difficult to believe that the filter "internals" are at fault so I'm left scratching my head

I've read on the forum that maybe I should swap out the housing (big ££ new) but i just can't figure how that would help as the leak is from the bottom of the filter

Do you think i should start with changing the sensor / loom?
I believe it's the same as on the 3.6 TDV8 or I've also seen that it's available as a Ford part. I could buy a SH loom but as they seem to be problematic I would prefer new.

You mention that the water sensor connector did not screw in quite flush when fitted to the replacement LR filter.
Is it possible that it might have been cross-threaded d'y think ?

If so, then the connector thread may now be damaged.
I know you said that the problem appeared resolved initially with the introduction of the Mahle filter.
But keep in mind that the fuel pressure at the filter is significant. The seal made by the viton washer inside the connector is dependent on the connector thread.

If the thread has been weakened, then fuel pressure at the washer is likely to be increased. And so over time that pressure may eventually defeat the connector seal.

Yes it's one of the remedies I did consider but when i used the Mahle filter it threaded perfectly and the thread itself looked perfect on the sensor connector ... although I did notice that the knurled part that sensor pushes on to does rotate slightly within the metal cap.

I think the "genuine" Land rover filter was far from genuine

i think the next step may be to replace that component ....... do you happen to know the part number?
So i may as well swap the sensor loom with it.

I think I might have a complete housing . Had one bought for my old l322 but it was the 3.6. If they are the same can fire it down .

The part number I have (based on a recent purchase) is LR072610.
A Google search suggests that this is correct.

The sensor must be able to rotate within the knurled cap.
Were it not then it would not be possible to unscrew the nut without twisting the sensor cable.
There is little slack and so with just a few turns out the nut it would start to become stressed and possibly fail.

On a related point, my experience has been that the leak has been from the bleed opening in the knurled cap rather than from the sensor itself.

To my knowledge, the sensor loom is not available separately.

I believe the housings & filters for the 3.6 & 4.4 are different but the sensor loom is the same.

Just now I'm only looking for a sensor loom.... but many thanks for the offer

for some reason RR no longer sell the loom separately from the complete filter housing on the 4.4 ...... I'll take a wild guess ..... £££££££

From the forum I can see that the 3.6 tdv8 loom is interchangeable with the 4.4
there's also a suggestion that the loom off a transit van will work  2011 TDV8 4.4 Vogue SE

however what you say about the connector being able to rotate within the cap makes perfect sense so maybe it's not the problem. If I could source one though I still think I'd change it just to rule it out

It seems that the knurled water basin that screws into the bottom of the fuel filter (the one that has an attachment for the push on sensor together with an outlet drain) is only available with the complete housing and can't be bought separately

RR don't make it easy

Could it just be the o-ring on the sensor that's leaking?

I changed one recently on a friends 4.4 TDV8 and it didn't come with a new o-ring.

I've changed the washer & filter twice David so i'm pretty confident there is a good seal ..... or at least it's not the fault of the O ring.  2011 TDV8 4.4 Vogue SE
