Drive shaft popped out - Drivers side

So today I may have done something that cause or helped this issue reveal its self, but gave me great joy in doing so. I had a 40 tonne wagon at work carting woodchip get stuck on the edge of the grass on full lock, no chance of going back as it would have split hydraulic hoses etc. Modern trucks. I was told, apparently have a cut off, when the wheels start spinning, it cuts the engine for safety, which is why it couldn’t get off the grass. So, I have tow straps in the back and think, easy, low range, slow pull and should free it up. Brilliant, all worked out great, few spectators saying that’s “impressive for a Range Rover” etc, was a great day. Anyway following my walk around from the site and heading back to the office and absolutely no drive when I get back in to do my journey. I tried all setting, and managed to get it moving, albeit feeling like I had a clutch that had about as much grip as the skin on rice pudding... but something at least when I had low range selected, I manged to get it turned around and back to the workshop (500m away). Looking underneath and noticed the driveshaft had come out from the front diff on the drivers side. Stealing a members photo called "Rom” below looks exactly like what I was dealing with.

Now, I have ordered another drive shaft, as it was only £35 just in case somehow I have broken the shaft due to the torque from pulling it, but from reading some posts, it appears I may be able to use a bar to force it back in. This is my plan for tomorrow, it has leaked a little oil (nothing serious) but wondered if there may be any future complications on on just forcing it back together?

Bit of back story, I have recently changed the front airbag suspension strut, upon doing so, when undoing the bolts, there was still a bit of pressure in the bag which caused a shunt to the hub, wondering now if this was the cause of said detachment above? Speaking with somebody “in the know”, he said that a driveshaft under stress shouldn’t dislodge from the diff. I'm wondering if it was already partly out and this was the straw the broke the camels back? Any comments or ideas welcome.

I will keep all updated. The car is a 2009 Vogue SE 3.6 TDV8. 90k miles.

It occurred when you changed the air strut, its quite common to happen.

Update:

So, tried getting the driveshaft back seated and didn't have a chance without the removal of the hub.

Once the hub and driveshaft were removed, found the end of the driveshaft had broken clean off!

So now comes the part of figuring out how to remove the other end which is still in the diff... Manged to see what was happening with the borescope. this showed the end of the driveshaft that had snapped and the retaining clip still in there.

Getting it out was going to be fun but thought of attaching the 10mm socket retrieval tool to the borescope and pulling them out gently, this had me thinking of the game operation with higher stakes!

Expecting it would be an all afternoon job of attaching different home made contraptions together to try and wrestle the parts out, but both managed to be dragged out very easily.

So my new driveshaft arrives tomorrow, now all it's going to take is putting it all back together again and changing the diff oil to remove any contaminants that could have ended up in there following this. Wish me luck

That looks as though the shaft hasn’t been fully fully home, otherwise it would have sheared much further down the shaft/ spline or possibly not sheared at all.

I think its all related to my front strut change. I think I had accidentally unseated it when doing the swap and then as you said, has been unseated, all power right on the end and has just failed where the recess has been cut for the clip.

I had mine pop out after not installing it properly following a strut change. No damage however! I thought it was going to be difficult to do but it turned out to be quite simple.
There's an installation tool, a collar type thing, the use of which isn't explained in the manual. I decided I needed something to be able to apply pressure on the shaft so that the snap ring compressed and engaged properly. A 42mm ( I think) exhaust clamp on the driveshaft did the job. Inserted shaft, pushed on exhaust clamp with a longish length of quite heavy steel angle, compressing the slide in the cv joint and springiness of the boot, then gave the angle a few good whacks. There was a sudden and very noticeable release when the driveshaft went home! I did it solo, but it would have been a doddle with someone to operate the lump hammer!
