Thinking about a 5.0 Supercharged L322, again..

Ho guys, I have previously been on here discussing swapping my 3.6 Touareg for a petrol RR. At the time the VW got a clean bill of health so the Range Rover went on the back burner.

This time the VW was not so lucky and has some pretty major issues to fix. As I was already considering swapping the car in the New year I have been keeping an eye on some RR online.
I have spotted a nice looking one, within budget.
It is a 2009 with 78k miles for £15k. Crucially for me it has have the timing chains done, along with injections, spark plugs, water pump, water pump and rad hoses, supercharger snout and coupler.
The only issue, If you can call it that is an intermittent fault with the forward warning system, that apparently clears itself. I have read that this can be a fairly common issue, but can be very difficult to isolate.

Anyway I would be interested in peoples opinions of the above, and perhaps what else to look out for. My understanding of these beasts is service history/maintenance trumps mileage.

They rust a lot, JLR were forced to use Tata steel so check tailgate, arches, rear of sills, subframe...etc Pete

The pictures and description seem to suggest it is rust free. It's a long trek away from me so viewing will only be once I am pretty well decided.

The forward warning fault is what gives me the most concerns with this one.

Iv seen that one on the bay and to be honest wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. My mate just had a 5.0 in his garage that had an engine rebuild and it was leaking coolant like gods knows rattling it's tits off and those weren't even the worst of it.
I mean 78k and it needed all of that doing seriously what does that say about its previous history.

3 owners on 14-15years. And FSH.
What was the history of your mates one, mileage etc?
most of the parts replaced appear to be what you would change during the timing chains work anyway, at least from what I have seen of what involved with a proper job, and not the method that involves locking the cams with zip ties.
I am genuinely interested in peoples experience and expertise on this as I only have Google and forums to go off.

The rebuild was done by someone else it ended up at my mates garage due to the many coolant leaks missing hose clamps etc. He got it sort of water tight but that was as far as he would go I helped him source a bleed valve which had been previously broken off and hot glued back on. I mean hot glue on a coolant pipe bleed valve....like that will work.

Just to many alarm bells on that one for me.....I just think their trying to get shot of it.

That sounds like a Censored mechanic to me. Likely someone trying to do the job on the cheap.
But I see your point.

more likely they skimped on paint prep and cavity sealing to save £££. All mild steel rusts equally well when exposed to air and water. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

How accurate are the values you get from these vehicle history checks?
I just did one on the vehicle I am looking at and it is returning a value quite a bit lower than the asking price.
Granted it has had some fairly expensive work done.

The first task for any vehicle I get will be a good rust treatment with lanoguard or similar

Like any car and particularly JLR you've just got to be lucky. There are many good ones out there but they're getting old and some have never been right from the factory. All you can do is the sort of due diligence you're doing; look properly when you go see; and try everything on the test drive.

Not sure what the forward warning is? Never had an issue with it on mine...but I did have an intermittent radar fail on the L405 when I got it. (Stopped cruise and the AEB from working) Took the supplying dealer 2 goes to fix it - 2nd go was a new radar unit. Dont know what that would have cost (under warranty) but although possibly eye watering, I dont think it wouldn't have been ruinous had i had to pay myself. Mike - MPx

When I buy L322’s I always remove the lock release / number plate lights trim (2 x torx screws) which gives good access to spray a rust inhibitor into the internal cavity.

I use Dinitrol ML which has good creep characteristics, and spray until it drips out of the drain hole each side.

As above there’s inevitably some existing rust on these now, this will at least keep it at bay to a degree and only takes 10 minutes. Jonathan

I have read about this approach before for the rear gate.

Sounds like a good proactive approach.

Can anyone advise on the current value of the 5.0 Supercharged FFRR?
I have been looking at a few for sale, both private and dealer. Of the 2x I have shortlisted the are both priced well above valuations I have seen.

For example I have seen a 2010 with 67k miles listed for £19,950 but the parker price for that vehicle is £7,450 - £8,850 for a forecourt price. Mycarcheck values it at £11,860 forecourt and £9,760 private.

Are these all out of touch values or are the sellers wrong??
