4.2 starting problem

have been through lots of posts on starting problems but can't find one that matches my issue..

Wednesday tried to start car to go to a speed awareness course and it would not start, so I attached my starter pack and the car fired up immediately, so I assumed I have a weak battery. On leaving the course it started just fine so I went to the gym, on leaving it started again with no issues.

So I marked it down to a one off, but I knew the battery was getting very old.

Friday it would not start, attached my starter pack still no go, so I ordered a new battery from Halfords and booked them to come to me and fit it.
Sunday, Halfords tech tested battery and found it faulty so replaced, he said he tested the alternator and the starter motor and all was well.

Monday started no problem.
Tuesday it really did not want to start. It took several attempts of turning the key. everything was normal ie various clicks showing the steering lock had disengaged, the steering wheel lowered all lights as normal (this is the same as all other times this has happened)

My gut feeling is that this problem is on the low current side or electronic side because when it does start there is no hesitation, the engine spins easily and fires very quickly.

I will check all the normal starting issues like earthing, dirty contacts etc, or because of the weather get my local garage to check.

Anything else I should check, please?

Probably a long shot, sounds a bit silly but it's easy to check at least. Are the battery terminal clamps done up tight enough and properly seated?

I'm doing a lot of work on mine and leaving the battery disconnected most the time but occasionally need to connect it up, and I had this symptom the other day when I went to start it. It's a new battery so I was shocked, I went out and double checked the terminals, made sure they were properly seated and tightened up. I thought they seemed ok but I still adjusted them and it started fine after that. This was probably due to me rushing and being slap dash but I'm wary of overtightening and damaging the battery terminals as I can be heavy handed.

Only suggest that as you recently had a new one fitted so there could be a slim chance it's something simple like that. '95 VW Corrado VR6

I needed to go out yesterday and it took 3 attempts before it would start, I had the door open so could clearly hear a click from deep in the engine bay which I assume is the starter solenoid.

I had two further stops and starting after each was perfect, I hate intermittent problems, but I am assuming an earthing issue or new starter motor required.
So I will get it booked in to be sorted, its way to cold to do it myself on the drive.

Oh unless I've missed something....

Had a similar problem on a LR Freelander a few years ago. It was the contacts on the starter solenoid. It was engaging, but no power to the starter motor.
I replaced just the solenoid to solve the problem All the best

I actually replaced the contacts in mine with an eBay kit been good as gold since. I do prefer to repair if possible rather than just replace I figured the factory genuin must be better than a modern replacment

Sounds like the starter motor. Pig of a job on the 4.2. I tried 5 times to change mine and when I did manage to remove it I ended up making and welding longer bolts for ease of any further removal. It’ll certainly confuse, and delight, any future custodian!

I didn't have to replace the starter motor, just the solenoid. It was very accessible on the Freelander, don't know about the L322 All the best
