Starter Clicking Problem

I have a 2014 Vogue ( twin battery but not start/stop). It’s a 4.4 L version. I have been getting intermittent starting problems where the car will randomly not start, just gives a series of clicks with about half second intervals. When it does this the fault will remain for hours and I normally leave it overnight, then it will fire up first go next morning. The fault may then not appear again for weeks. It happened yesterday and this time I tried jump starting from the posts under the bonnet. The jump start attempt made no difference to the fault and the starter just kept clicking. I’ve today had the main battery tested and that passed as good. In the past a local garage replaced the starter relay saying it cured the fault, and on one occasion an AA patrolman got the starter to work from under the car saying he thought the starter itself was good. So I’m thinking there’s an intermittent wiring issue somewhere. I’m puzzled as to why the jump start didn’t work, so any advice would be welcome

The intermittent non-starting and getting a click when the starter button is pressed is what happened to my 2012 WM. A new starter motor was fitted and the problem went away. There are several threads on the 322 section about this. So it might be the same thing on your 405. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Yes, agree with CS, could be starter relay fault, starter motor fault, weak battery, or corroded earth fault. You need to check for all of these and rule out. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

The 405 also suffers with corrosion in the junction box for the main battery cable in the OSF arch Thumbs Up

Thanks for the info guys. Good call Mikey, I hadn’t heard of this issue. How do I get to that junction box to check.

Don't suppose someone has a picture or schematic of this location please? Cheers
