Hi Guys, I need to seek your wisdom and advice again. I've done the parallel wiring mod today. Big red wire in fuse box down to solenoid trigger wire. All work done with battery disconnected. I now hove no start at all and cannot seem to work out why. I've done all solder and shrink wrap joints (both ends). I made sure I have no resistance in the new piece of wiring. It gives all symptoms of flat battery but the battery is 100% good. All other electrics, windows, wipers, heater, everything working fine.

It seems when testing initially, I had crank voltage at the red wire in the fusebox, now zero with connector plugged in or disconnected. Nothing else has been touched or removed. No relays disturbed, absolutely nothing. I haven't been back to do further meter checks as I've run out of time. Jump pack makes no difference at all.

I'm wishing I had never touched it now.

By the way.......initial symptoms, periodic starter clicking but getting slowly worse.

Presumably your new wire comes from the starter relay so is that relay operating?

Hi Graeme's, no, I simply ran a wire from the red in the fuse board to the trigger. All other wiring is untouched. I took that info from the long post on here re starter issues

Graeme's, further checks show P0615 00 starter relay circuit fault. I've taken the wiring back to original but still have identical fault. Code says it's there to protect circuit from current excess. Would you know if there is a fuseable link? Fuses in engine bay all check ok. I also confirm a 12v feed to the relay.

I think I recall reading somewhere that there’s a 400A fuse under/near the battery. If it’s this high at 400A, I suspect it’s supplying the starter. So might be worth looking at circuit diagrams and see if this fuse exists, and if it does you can check that.

Which red wire in the fuse panel and under what circumstances does it have power? I didn't run an alternate wire so I didn't look at what would be involved in doing so.

Did you leave the original trigger wire connected to the starter solenoid when you connected your HD wire?

If the starter relay (R6) is the same as the fuel pump relay (R5) (its cold and dark outside here) then you could swap them to check if the fuel pump still runs and the starter relay engages when trying to start the engine, now that you've restored the wiring to original.

After checking the wiring diagram, your thick red wire is likely to be the 4mm2 wire from the starter relay going to the starter solenoid. It sounds as though the starter solenoid might have a dead coil or a bad contact between the relay coil pins and the sockets in the fuse panel or the coil contacts have burnt, so best to try another relay of the same current rating.

The note about the relay's existance being to limit current draw is the very reason why relays are used.

Hi graeme, firstly thanks for your help. I have resolved the issue purely by chance. I swopped the relays and the fault remained. I checked ll fuses and all still fine. In the end, I must have had a bad contact on the multi plug with the 4mm red wire. It started straight up and code has cleared. All I did was fiddle with the connector. I'm now reluctant to modify the wiring in case something fails again. Thanks

Sorry this has taken me a while to resolve. Other jobs to do Etc. Starting issue now fully resolved. I had a new Denso starter fitted yesterday. The difference has been amazing. I never realised the car was at all sluggish in the slightest when starting. I drove the car away yesterday and the speed the engine engages now really is an unbelievable difference. If anyone is having the same issue, I would highly recommend a new starter as well as the wiring mod. It really does make such a difference.

By the way, if anyone is looking for a great LR specialist in southern Scotland, I use Gibson Auto Service, cumnock Ayr. It isn't local to me but there skill is second to none. What they don't know, isnt worth knowing. Highly recommended.
