Wheel removal

Does it matter what height is selected to remove L405 wheels. Had a search but could not find anything

Didn't know there might be a height restriction. FWIW I always change mine with it set high so that there's less work to do with the jack. Mike - MPx

My local garage told me to lock it in access height before jacking it up.

I just jack it up Confused

That said, I only ever use a trolley jack - not the one that's in the wheel well - plenty of horror stories about that one.....

No reason I can see to jack at access height. Let the suspension system do the work for you and jack at off road height. It also means the car is less off level as the jacked corner will be at less of a height difference than the other 3. This can be an issue depending on what jack you are using and the surface it’s on as if the jacking point moves laterally with respect to the ground the jack is on due to the excessive extension it could introduce unstable lateral loads. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Getting a bit lost here. Are you saying that if I jack it at access height, the body lifts to off road height before the wheel starts lifting off the ground

jack it on the jacking points on the body and that will happen...you will be extending the suspension before the wheel lifts.

if you jack on the rear arms or the front engine support bar [???] then that wheel will be lifted..
hen you let the FF down the suspension will take a short time to 'level'' ... - .- -.

Leave a door open to stop it self leveling. You don’t want the self leveling to be active when jacking. The suspension will extend to it’s full length of travel when jacked irrespective of what height it’s set at initially i.e the suspension system can’t lift a wheel / shorten a strut. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

^^^ for me, leaving a door open doesn't seem to work ( door or tailgate ). The blooming thing still tries to level itself out so that by the time I lower it back down, its sitting squatted down.

I've never really figured it out yet how to stop it. V8 or else ...

P243 on my handbook
Set air suspension to normal height

I have tried various combinations of off-road or access height and it makes no difference when i use the jacking points - the suspension will fully extend when the vehicle rises
I have also tried leaving doors / tailgate open
Also made no difference on my RR

Don’t really know why it matters if you have a jack with enough lift when using the jacking points

Interesting on the self-levelling and or change of height thing.

When I was regularly changing all 4 wheels on the L322s from Summer to Winter wheels and back I just stuck it in off road height (so less jacking), left a back door open, and the suspension stayed where it was until I'd finished and shut the door. Worked like that across all 3 L322s for over a decade or more. Indeed even when just selecting a different height within the cars, opening a door would stop the change. So (eg) I'd press access height as coming to a stop, but if I was too slow someone always opened a door and stopped it dropping before it had finished the change. I'd thought it one of their nanny state safety measures?

I've not got Winters for the L405 but did a couple of wheel changes all round when I had the wheels refurb'd and bought in some temps while they were being done. I adopted the same strategy but honestly can't remember what the car did. It was certainly nothing to worry me or even notice - there was no "levelling " going on as I worked around the car lifting one corner at a time. But I have noticed that this one will settle to access height even if someone opens a door too soon (set to happen automatically) so maybe L405s are different? Mike - MPx
