2014 Range Rover Vogue SE SDV8 Loire Blue
New Owner what OBD software can I get?

Hi All,

I have bought an L405 Vogue SE SDV8 and coming from mainly running BMWs for ages I don’t have any kit to diagnose it.

For BMW I had a hooky copy of ISTA the software BMW use.

Is there a go to kit that comes with software and cable for Land Rover?

I’m seeing IID, Gap, SDD and don’t know where to start.

Kindest regards

GAP IID are super expensive - £450+

I could understand if an owner was going to get their hands dirty and do their own servicing etc, but for the average owner who would still take it to a main dealer or LR specialist anyway for servicing and issue resolution is there a use case that warrants that kind of outlay?

Suppose it depends on how much you want to access and set or reset.

For my purposes I have the Veepeak OBD11 Bluetooth reader. Splendid little device that shows live data and any fault codes with a link to the web attached to any code for research. Clearing codes is included and there is a ‘pro’ upgrade for a nominal subscription or one off payment. Otherwise, you just download the app to your mobile or iPad/ laptop and away you go. I’ve had this a couple of years and use it on my recently purchased L405 AB, my Bentley GTC and the wife’s Mini Clubman Cooper SD. Works great and purchased from Amazon , £33.

For me GAP Diagnostic IID is a no-brainer some justification:

£450 is around 4 main stealer visits, as they charge c. £100+VAT for the first "diagnostic" hour, warranty or not.

If you get rid of the Range, or buy a newer one, re-homing the tool to a new VIN is cheap, and the resale value is excellent.

The tool set allows you to perform a LOT of functions over Carly et al. I've just swapped the transfer box oil in my SVA and reset the clutch adaptations, The issue at a dealer calls for a double flush. I will change the 1.5l of fluid again next week and reset again. Fluid was c. £69 for 3l, not sure the 2024 cost of a dealer/specialist doing that, but it's more.

Programming/changing the Car Configuration File is included and easy.

Even going for a 4 wheel alignment means (to have it work properly) putting the suspension in "tight tolerance" mode, the IID can do this.

Options for SW upgrades and even remapping exist within the eco system.

The live values and app are superb on either tablet or phone. The latest G4 model connects over IP and is even faster.

Above all of the above, ANY time I have contacted the team at GAP, they've been incredible with support. Even possible to get Beta/one-off SW builds to satisfy a more bespoke function.

I can't recommend them highly enough.

I know this may sounds like a sales pitch, but I don't have any affiliation, I just work as an Engineer and appreciate what the team at GAP have achieved for a reasonably low price.

I hope this is some use, if not- apologies for going on so long! Formerly happymadison1978

Whatever you do, dont buy the Nanocom update for the L322, its practically useless. I already have the unit for managing my TD5 Defender and thought I could get the Gap functionality for the £200 upgrade but I was wrong, it can read ecu and clear ecu and 1 or 2 other things and thats it. Bit of a farce for them to charge for it. Had to go through a Paypal claim to get my money back as well due to their method of supplying licenses. I will pay the extra for a Gap tool now. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Grey/Ivory

#4 for the GAP iiD BT G3 (or G4 for post MY17).
Second-hand G3’s come up on here & elsewhere for about £300 (but you have to be very quick!)
These units hold their value amazingly, as others have said, especially when purchased used.

However, I have also used the excellent iCarSoft LRV3 which is much more intuitive with its own display, and TBH it now does everything the iiD tool does except for editing the CCF, (which not all users want to fiddle with, only the diehard tinkerers Embarassed ). At £175 for the usual stuff like scanning for DTC’s, battery swap, various service resets etc. it’s hard to beat, there are lifetime updates and service support also, although the latter can be a bit slow at times.

Horses for courses, much depends on what you want to do with it, as much as on the tool itself, but it’s good to have so many choices, don’t rule anything out initially, and do a bit of learning before you buy. Thumbs Up “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?
