DPF loading too quickly

I have a 4.4 tdv8 and it’s loading its DPF following a regen in about 50 miles and sensible steady driving.
Not sure if it’s related but it was fine before having a service …

No fault codes showing on Gap IId .
So far I have done the O-ring modification to the inlet pipe, it’s now nice and tight .
I’ve cleaned the gunk from the MAF sensor (the one in the inlet manifold donut)
I have smoke tested the system and no leaks showing ….

I have purchased some 70mm silicone hose and will be changing the 4 manifold hoses anyway.
While doing this work, is there anything else to look at/check or replace at the same time ? I assume this will mean I can see the oil cooler so will check for leaks .

But I am drawing a blank on why it’s loading it’s DPF so quickly.
What to try next, I was thinking to get another DPF pressure sensor?

Thanks
Matt

How many miles on the car? Are you saying it’s initiating a regen at 50mile intervals? Is it fully clearing the soot down to <5g after a regen? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

It’s done 74k so not high mileage for its age (2010) , but did around 8000 miles in the 7 months leading up to this problem, and was fault free .

It will hit between 20 and 23g and start doing a regen as it should and gets down to below 5g without any issue . The problem is how quickly it’s getting back to full again .

And yes, it’s going from below 5g to over 20g in around 50miles of steady driving .

Loading itself this quickly has caused it to go from amber to red warning when I can’t suddenly get past 30mph and get a regen (that happened on a recent motorway trip when I hit traffic just as it was getting near to 23g) .

Almost certainly you have an air leak on the intake. The only way to see for sure if it’s not from the usual places is to get a garage to perform a high pressure smoke test. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Had it at a mates Garage and used his smoke machine, it gets to 15psi and left it on for about 15 minutes with no signs of smoke escaping.
When you say high pressure, do you you mean something a lot higher than 15psi ?

15psi is high pressure. Was this done recently in response to the problem? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Yes, and nothing showed up as leaking .

Apart from the DPF loading issue, it’s running perfectly.
Pulled our caravan with it no problems but was loading the DPF at roughly the same range (50-60miles).

That is why I was thinking of trying to replace the DPF pressure sensor but don’t want to just throw parts at it randomly.

Just read the first post where you said it was fine until it was serviced. Undo the oil filter and check the drain- off plug at the bottom of the housing has not been dislodged. This is to drain the filter housing when you remove the filter but if it is dislodged oil will continue to drain into the PCV system and intake which can cause the DPF to get clogged quickly. There are some threads on here which go into this in detail. It’s also associated with excessive oil consumption. Fingers crossed it’s just as simple as this. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Thanks for your help Jeygee, I will take a look at that tomorrow and then have a 70mile trip to do in it on Tuesday to see if it’s any different.

Are you certain it has got the correct spec oil in the engine ?
Only C1 spec will give you approx 250- 300 miles between regens ,but lots of slow town use will reduce this.

C1 will only reduce the ash buidup over the long term but has no effect on the regen interval itself. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

How many miles between regens did you get before the trouble started?
People, like me, are eagerly anticipating the results of today's run.
Good luck.

So to answer Spridget, I don’t know how many miles i was doing between regens before the issue, however from lots of reading on this, I believe it should be at least 300miles and sometimes a lot more if doing longer motorway trips . Mine was down to just 50miles .

I didn’t get to look in the oil filter yesterday, got home from work and went to do it, turns out it’s a 36mm socket and my set goes to 32mm.
So 3D printed a 36mm socket today and have just taken it off, Jaygee was correct, I have a little thing that looks like rubber bung under the spring that was not aligned with the hole, so would not be sealing up .

I will try to put it back correct and take the car for a good run in the next few days, however on using the car today, i’ve now got a rear suspension height sensor voltage fail to fix first .

Got to love life with a Range Rover !

Hi Defender.
Fingers crossed that you've found the culprit.
Regarding miles between regens, I get about 170 with a TDV6 and that seems to be about the norm with the L405, although people who do a lot of long ,fast journeys get a lot more.
Annoyingly my friend has a Jag XF with the same engine and he gets about 1000. Apparently it's to do with the DPF distance from the engine meaning that it doesn't get hot enough to do passive regens unless you're doing about 80mph. I keep a good eye on mine with the Cot kit and I haven't seen any sign of a passive regen.
Hope the drain valve fix was a success.
