4.2 SC 2006MY sudden warnings, lamps and less power steering

Hi Folks,

I have a 2006MY 4.2 SC Autobiography on a '55' plate.

It was through the MOt a couple of weeks ago, has sat the last week while I have been off work.

Today I took it to a shop on the other side of town (9 miles or so), maybe in the shop 45 minutes or thereabouts.

On the return journey I took a different route via the bypass and all was fine until about 3 miles in when I was coming off a roundabout and accelerating back up to 70 the following happened all much at the same time -

Speedo dropped to zero

DSC warning lamp illuminated (amber)
Emergency brake assist illuminated (amber)
ABS warning illuminated (amber)
AFS warning lamp illuminated (amber)

HDC system fault warning message
DSC Inactive message
suspension lowered message

The car does indeed seem to be lower.

Definite reduction in how the steering feels - much closer to there being no power assistance.

Normal braking seems unaffected.

There were no weird noises or smells so I drove it home, I have turned it off and back on which seems to cure most things but not this time.

Anyone any idea? I am hoping this isn't a you need a new ECU type problem as that will probably end the car.

Can you read the codes?
From my experience with a Jag of the same era (2003 xjr) the DSC, ABS etc etc can be linked to failure of an ABS sensor on one of the wheels, but you really need to start by reading the codes.... All the best

Hi,

unfortunately not, always fancied a GAP IID but couldn't ever justify the cost - there is a generic bosch tool at work I could use tomorrow, I guess this might not have to be an LR specific reader for an ABS sesnsor?

How old is your battery? After sitting for a week it could be a low voltage fault that's triggered it but unlikely after you've done 9 miles going to the shops.

An ABS sensor is quite likely as well. A friend had issues on his TDV8 in that it shut everything down. His turned out to be the reluctor ring on the driveshaft rather then the sensor though.

Definitely read the codes off it before you go any further Smile

Thought I would update the thread - firstly thansk for those who have made suggestions, unfortunately the car never made it as far as work yesterday, around 1/2 a mile form the house on one of the main routes into town the ABS EBA and DSC lights went out (AFS still on).

I briefly got a 'transmission overheat - slow down' message and then the car ground to a crawl.

Turned it off and back on in hope and it drove very slowly, but felt like the traction control as constantly kicking in, so managed to get it off the road and called the AA.

The guy came and his computer had the following codes (that I remember) -

'Front left wheel speed signal implausible'

'Front left wheel speed sensor open circuit'

He didn't have a sensor so the recovery lorry came and took it to my usual garage.

They have had a look and advised the toothed ring / reluctor ring is no longer attached to the CV joint, so ultimately a new CV joint / resultor ring and probabyl a new sensor will cure it.


It's mad to think though that this was how someone designed this component failure to be dealt with by the computers. If you were offroad in the middle of an expedition or something you'd be well stuck. I'd have though the ABS etc lamps being on, a warning about the various systems being inhibited and the traction control being inhibited would have been better - at least then it would still be able to be driven somewhere for repair.

C'est la vie, it's still a very nice place to be when it's driveable

Sorry, late to this one. The speedo feeds from the abs sensor on the passenger left rear wheel. Had reluctor ring split due to rust when I had my TD6. Will cause all sorts of errors and you will be lucky to get the car to move at all. As it thinks the car is stationary, due to zero speed input, but still gets movement input from the other 3 wheels it will think those are spinning so applies traction control. Obviously that won’t help, so it winds back engine power until you are flat to the floor at less than walking pace.

Abs, hdc etc won’t work so lights on dash. Power steering affected as that’s speed sensitive.

Had to buy new half shaft at the time as ring not available on its own.

That was over 10 years ago.
