Just clean the recess of the letters as clean as you can before inserting the 3M tape, doesn’t need to be anything special, soap, water and elbow grease should do it.

The tailgate likewise needs to be clean, panel wipe or some sort of grease free cleaner is fine.

Do you have a template to work to?

Jon

Yes, I have the template by PowerfulUK, I tried to use mask tape whilst the letters was still on to en ensure I'll add the template at the right place, also took measurements.

I realised I have an unopened botte of Gyeon Q²M Prep, would it work to spray this on the tailgate and wipe off?

Yes I think you’ll be fine with that. The 3M tape is pretty sticky and is quite forgiving of a surface that’s not perfectly prepped.

Looks about right to me, just make sure the tape isn’t too high on the areas where it’s hard to create the right profile, like on the round bit of the “R” for example - just makes it sit flat better on the panel.

Final product!
I did remove the letters and added the one by one into the template from PowerfulUk.
I did not use the template tape to get the template on the tailgate rather masking tape to keep it in the right position, then I checked my measurements prior to removal about 3-4 times.

How do you think it went?

Here I go again hijacking threads, is it possible to buy a template, the one I made for my l322 is a lot narrower to what I now need for my L405. I made the previous one from Christmas cards and masking tape - but I'd rather not wait until Christmas. I got the letters of another member and prepped them with new sticky tape so they are ready to go on now.. Geoff

Nice paint job on the tailgate. How much did that cost. I need to get mine done. Cheers. Also own a 1976 Land Rover 101 3.5 V8.

I suspect the cost of taking it to Sweden might impact the cost consideration a bit Very Happy
