trouble with the 4,4 tdv8

i have a 2011 tdv8 autobiography.
when i collected it it was leaking oil that ment 3 weeks in the workshop to fix after 2 miles of driving!

then the camera surround system has been changed twice and still not working as it should.

on friday i had to call for the tow truck since the car was in safe mode och could only drive aprox 20mph. they say its a faulty filter in the diesel. they told me at the work shop that the new 4,4 tdv8 isn't made to run in town!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i both work and live in town. i do have a summer house out side but now i am driving a audi a4 with kids and dog. not ok!

i have asked land rover for a s/c autobiography as a replasement. Will i still have the same problems? 2011 tdv8 autobiography bournville / Arabic

you will probably still have the problem with the surround cameras. Mine have never really worked properly either (2010 s/c)

Crazy thing to say. Both TDV8 and SC should work perfectly in all conditions.

Demand a replacement you must have a Friday afternoon model.....

That sounds like a DPF problem, they're not made to do short distances, you have to drive long distances once in a while with the new diesels to clean the particulate filter out and by driving short distances it never has the time to do that so if you do a lot of short distances buy a petrol.
I've driven both the old and new Supercharged and I must say the 5L is in a different league alltogether!
Keep us posted if you get problems with your new one, I'm interested to know!

As CSK says, you have to get the vehicle hot enough so that the DPF can burn off the particulates and soot it has filtered out.

Don't buy any modern diesel with a DPF unless you do a distance run occasionally. Otherwise the DPF will fill up and you'll be back at the dealers from time to time...

CSK, Fox and Java Jungle are spot on.........

If you are only driving in town then the DPF is not being able to 'regenerate', meaning that you will have had an amber warning (to take the car for a run to regenerate), failing that then it will go to red to protect the engine from suffocating due to a full DPF.

DPF's are now on all new diesel vehicles because of EU emissions targets, therefore until an alternative solution is found then the DPF is the only option, unless of course you go along the petrol route.

Rest assured that all late deisels with DPF's will do exactly the same if they cannot regenerate, therefore it is not restricted to Range Rover product.

When we sell a DPF equipped vehicle we now explain that the driver may need to change their driving habbits, for example taking it for a 30 min run once a week, or ensuring that they head out of town when/if they see the amber warning. We have a couple of customers with drivers who sit for hours with the engine idling whilst watching TV with the AC on waiting for their boss. In this situation they occasionally find the amber light come on if they have had a busy week of 'waiting', therefore when they see the warning they take the vehicle for a quick run to allow it to regenerate.

So it seems all have the same problem, but perhaps the new models have been modified ?

Anyone have any more details if it is still a problem for 2012 MY's ?

It's going to be an issue for some time as rules are tight and there just isn't an alternative at the moment to a DPF on a diesel in order to get the tail pipe emissions as clean as it needs to be.

So all new deisels for the forseeable future will have the DPF.
You can remove it, but that may cause problems when the vehcle needs an MOT as the "smoke test" which forms part of a diesel MOT is being tightened up for later vehicles. This is due to lots of people (with cars of all different makers) removing the DPF.
It's quite common for people to have problems and get them removed, then weld the exhaust back up.

Basically if you do short trips only you are better off with a petrol.
Shame the only petrol Range Rover is also the most expensive and depreciates faster. Sad

The dealer has gotten back to me! Apperently it was not only the dpf, the engine has been leaking oilmin to the turbos and has damaged them so the turbos as well as the dpf has to be exchanged! This will cost more or less 10-20000 pounds, in total they have soon repared my car for £50000, this is why we now are discussing sending the car back and giving me a s/c 2012 instead. 2011 tdv8 autobiography bournville / Arabic

I was tw@tting down the M1 at that speed because the Land Rover factory told me I had to once a week. I can confirm this as I have it in writing in the Operators Handbook. So you see, it must be OK Rolling with laughter Currently running FFRR MY10 TDV8 3.6L and a Disco 3 XS Commercial (tank like but very effective as a Company van). Plus one mint condition Track Day Car in the form of an E36 M3 3.2L Evolution circa June 1996 with lots of go faster bits and only 52k miles on the clock! Oh, plus a few bits to make it slow down really quickly as well! Luvverly.

What's the point of buying a Diesel when you have to drive around for the sake of cleaning the DPF?
Now we all have an excuse to buy a Supercharged! It's more economical and more eco-friendly, no need to drive around to clean the DPF Thumbs Up

I drive a lot of town, but never had that amber light.

Now if it happens, I will know what to do. Give it some speed....
