Whining noise

My07 V8 petrol - getting an occasional random whining noise with pitch related to engine revs. No impact on engine performance or driving, just load and annoying as it drowns out the lovely V8 burble.. Happens under load and also at rest in neutral so not wheel bearing or gearbox. Sounds a bit like a high speed fan - is the main fan tied into a clutch type system? Happens more on hot day or after stop start town driving so am thinking cooling fan.

Any thoughts?

2 cooling fans fitted. One electric and one viscous coupling. If the noise increases with engine revs that would suggest possibly the viscous coupling could be sticking. Is the car under or over heating at all? Could be a problem with one of the thermostats. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Whining noise - back again....

AHHHHHHH!!! Censored Censored Censored !!!

Bloody fan issue is back again....Thought new thermostat had fixed it, but unfortunately not - turns out I just haven't had the A/C on since it was changed.... Embarassed

Done a bit of investigative work and found out that Visous fan locks on whenever A/C is switched on, regardless of internal/external/engine temperature. As soon as A/C turned off, viscous fan de-couples and all is quiet (well, as quiet as a V8 can be...).

It sounds bloomin' awful driving through town with A/C on - get all sorts of funny looks from surrounding drivers when i pull away - sounds like a turbine under the bonnet..

Anybody else have the same issue when A/C is on? Don't want to upset Dan by driving around with it off...

Switzerland 2006 Range Rover Vogue Supercharged Java Black

well on mine I have the fan kicking in when I drive off at home and when I'm driving slow and have the AC on. (and it is hot)

I quite like the sound: a supercharger and an intercooler together Very Happy

but I have a whining nose when I drive 60mph or more. But it is only when the engine is pulling and it is not always present. I will check if it is the fan.. you never know with this british cars Razz

Get a vacuum hose and brush and hold it out the window as you accelerate. That should get some looks. Razz

Spent a bit of time mucking about this morning, and it would appear that the noise is not coming from the viscous fan as i had assumed before.

Given it's only happening when A/C is on, I'm starting to wonder if it's actually the A/C compressor thats making the noise.

One for the dealer next week methinks. Thanks god for dealer warranties.....

Have excatly the same noise. Not bothering yet with, as the dealer just wants a lot of money per hour finding the fault. Hope your dealer finds something. Daniel

Air con compressor it was. FF is now back to singing its sweet V8 roar. Never know such a small thing could make such a racket!
