Tailgate thinks its open

Just bought Range Rover P400E Fifty. 2021. Problem is that although the tailgate works fine the car thinks its open so cannot lock the car, just two beeps. Can the tailgate be reset or is it a job for the dealer
Its just an expensive piece of art sitting in the garage just now.

How recently is 'just bought' ? and was it from a dealer ? Any warranty ?

I guess you could try manually closing both the lower and upper tailgates to ensure they are as closed as can be. Though usually the upper won't close unless it thinks the lower is fully closed.

Is it telling you win the dash that the tailgate is open ?

Just bought as in 2 days ago. Dealer 300miles away & has a warranty but not got docs yet.
Worked fine until yesterday (i know 1 day) Seems to work ok on buttons & keyfob. Tried pushing it when closed. The icon on the display shows its open , so cannot lock the car, only a couple of bleeps

Was it a main dealer ?

If so, it should include Landrover Assistance & they will come out to you.

Other than fully manually closing both sections (from open) and giving a good slam, I'm not sure what else to try short term.

If you have a code reader, it should tell you exactly what the error is.

There may be something in the workshop manual, available from the Wiki - link up on the top right under where it says fullfarrr.com

Can you hear the “brrrrrrrrr” of the tailgate motor (latching) for a few seconds after the upper tailgate first closes?
It may not be latching properly. It may sound daft, but a weak battery can cause this (I had it on mine) and your car has possibly sat for weeks on a Dealer lot without getting charged…….
You need 12.6V parked without the engine running, cheap enough to check….. Thumbs Up “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

As its a plug in hybrid P400E, does it have a normal battery as well as the battery for the electric motor or does the battery bank take care of everything. I charged up the hybrid last night, so its at 100% & as the car was collected from 350miles away any other battery would be well charged
As a point can someone enlighten me if there is a normal battery as well as hybrid system

Yes it also has a 12V battery as well as the HV hybrid system. If the 12V battery is depleted it may charge to only a fraction of its original capacity, so it can easily become discharged again, especially if stop/start happens a lot. It may be a red herring, but it’s quick & cheap to check. Sluggish tailgate opening and/or sluggish deployable steps are common indicators of a weak (12V) battery, (although steps can be slow due to mechanical reasons.)

Get an iiD3 BT tool and check for error codes, or take it back to the dealer! “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Thanks for that. Thumbs Up Booked in to main dealer, earliest next Tuesday, so it will be an ornament until then. Also £160 for diagnostic check Big Cry . Think I will look at code readers

The iiD tool is about £500, but just has so much more functionality than others, and will pay for itself many times over. I bought the iCarSoft LRV3 myself, (£175) which is a good compromise, although having only 1 guy on tech support can be a bit slow sometimes.

Forum regular LR indy Mikey is based in Dundee I think, so it might be worth PMing about future work? “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

I do use Mikey for my Sport. I phoned him about this but he is over the top just now & could not give me a date to see the car. Went to see a friend of mine who owns a garage. He cleaned up the docking points, initially it worked then failed. After a lot of trying he gave it a hard manual closure which enabled the car to be locked & useable as long as I don't use the boot it will be fine until it goes to the main dealers on Tuesday. Thanks everyone, will let you know the outcome.

Don't forget the secondary 12V battery from the right side of the boot, it's responsible for a lot of concerning stuff as power braking, ABS, etc...

Car been to Main Dealers, apparently the strikers were out of position, re-adjusted, now working fine. Charged for 30mins labour, which I thought was fine.
Health check picked up a split rubber on passenger side wiper. So much for Auto 100 preparation on the car prior to sale. I shall start a new thread on them. Censored Whistle
