I have an AGM battery that was installed in May 2023 by RAC for the previous owner. I changed it out last month for a new one to try and get to the bottom of a weird alarm beep issue I have. It didn’t make a difference.

You’re welcome to buy it for £50, fit it and use my GAP tool whilst you’re here. My postcode is IP25 7EX.

That’s very kind of you, it’s a little too far for me to pop round at the moment (young child taking up all my spare time!) but if there’s an unexpected trip to my mother-in-laws very soon (Hintlesham) I will let you know.

Spotted a secondhand but tested oem battery exactly like mine, it’s cheap enough to buy and see if it solves the drain issue. Mine is clearly too old regardless so needs changing. 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

I wouldn't buy a used battery unless it's got proven history like Steveg as you will never know if the car or the battery is at fault. They are cheap enough new. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

My Ctek charger finally came today, a big improvement on my trusty old Halfords one that got me out of bother many a time.

My oem battery was 12.00v before I started, despite setting the Ctek to AGM (non recon) and it completing to the green light over 6/7 hours, the voltage read 12.29v 5 mins after the charger was disconnected.

Guessing this means the battery is toast. Hoping this solves my drain issue. Did a quick alternator test and it was a constant 14.59 volts so guessing no issues there.

Now I just need to decide if I go straight for a like for like AGM or revert back to the powerful standard Excide battery I found via Tanya that I imagine was fitted from factory.

Feel free to throw in any more opinions based on experience. 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

If the car’s BMS can run an AGM battery then get an AGM battery. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I can only presume it can as it seems have been ok since it was fitted many years ago, I will seek clarification incase it helps anyone else. It seems that dealers were / have been fitting them to L322’s from the year 2007 and up.

I am going to call a few dealers tomorrow and simply ask them the cost and spec of a new battery based on my vin and see what they say.

I will report back. 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

When you give them your VIN, also ask if the software needs upgrading so that the BMS can take advantage of an AGM battery - you may be lucky and your car is already using BMS that has the smarts to take advantage of the AGM battery ( even though we don't have Start/Stop functionality )

It would be good to know what the VIN was when it became standard, I thought it was some time in 2010

That's one clue you may have AGM compatability as they should not be charged over 15 volts. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Interesting chat with a nice bloke called Steve at LR Bishop Stortford.

The original battery code for my vin when new - YGD500130 (90ah. 950cca).

The part number has been superseded four times, the current part number - LR181092.

Interestingly that is not in stock and his computer had no info on it, so could not say if it was AGM or not.

Then I looked at the online oem catalogue and it gave me the part number for a ‘L322 02-09 classic’ as - YGD000271. This does not look like it’s an AGM battery but at 190mm long I’m not sure it would even fit?!

The current part number for my current oem AGM battery is - LR094642 (made by Excide).

Confused? Steve at the dealer was. He’s digging in to it more for me.

His master tech said running an AGM battery in the car is fine, especially if it’s been in there for so long.

And if my car as JayGee points out is not charging at over 15v there should not be an issue (I will test again to make sure everything was switched off). 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

well Steve is local to me, I used to buy from Lookers, but now I buy from Taylors in Great Dunmow, they are more switched on than Lookers Smile

Do you have the LED Digital dash on your MY09 car ?

Also if you want to change your battery yourself, then hit me up for the special TS30 torx tool

https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic70889.html

The video below does not look like he has the ECU in the way, so have a look to see if you do happen to have the ECU and the small rectangular black ECU bracket holder with the TS30 torx screws

But back to the GAP IID and the AGM Battery - youtube explains it better than me Smile

Will take a look at what I can see from above the battery re screws. 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

aha, then I don't think the ECU is in the way, so no need for the TS30 torx tool Smile

Thanks. Watched it, I guess if I replace like for like I won’t need to tell the car it’s got a new battery?!

(Note, after a recent conversation with JLR they say my car does not need coding to a new battery). 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

Current state of play: everyone I speak to is confused.

JLR Bishop Stortford - Steve did not get a full answer from the LR official tech team (located abroad apparently). Basically they came back with the part number - LR181092. As mentioned their tech says it’s ok to run an AGM. Why? I don’t know aside from it’s been in the car and it’s been fine so…

JLR Nottingham - Supplying dealer of the car and maintained it until 2022. They fitted the battery to the car in Jan 2016, currently their computer says it only fits 2013 onwards - so why was it fitted? They are not sure but I am waiting for a call back.

Steve Parker’s Ltd parts - This is where the I found the AGM battery I have listed as suitable for an L322 from vin 7A (mines 9A). Only the guy now says this is a mistake, it’s from vin 7A for the 4.2 supercharged only. He is now looking into the correct part number as he quickly got confused.

Me - I am in two minds, one side of me says swap like for like and forget about it, I now have an AGM charger to boot, the other side says it should not be on the car by all accounts and it maybe best to go back to a flooded battery.

Let’s see, but surely it should not be this hard to know what the correct or compatible batteries are!

The basic question I have asked everyone is - can my BMS handle an AGM battery, it’s seems like it has for over 7 years so guessing yes - I just need confirmation to feel confident. 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

There must be a fairly easy test to check the cars BMS as the AGM battery has a defined battery charging sequence. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
