TDV8 4.4 - The Joy of Ownership

I need to start reassembling the old girl following Dinitrol treatment at South West Rust Proofing, but first:

1.) Fix the headlight power wash
2.) Glue the loose parking sensor holder back in place
3.) Stop the front break squeal
4.) Replace the break pad wear sensor

I honestly don’t know how I’d fill my days without her !

Pete, I paid £400 +vat eight years ago, which I thought was a bit expensive, but as a long term investment for a car I always intend to keep , worth every penny.

I think it would probably be an even wiser investment for anyone with a late model L405 they intend to keep, considering the many reports of corrosion on all the pipework and the effect of road salt on aluminium.

Nice.
My brake pad squeal was due to glazed pads (Meyle). Now on Borg and Beck. All from Advanced Factors with forum discount code AF4LRP Bow down Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

I think my pad squeal was due to an inverse orientation of the anti vibration spring…. Not tested yet but when I went to refit the pad springs, following the orientation that they were when I took them off, I noticed they fouled the wear sensor ( which was probably why it was broken ). With them inverted they clear the wear sensor and I notice that the spring “shoulders” support the top of the pads.

Good tip on the orientation of the spring. Mine squeal, and need new pins due to some previous gorilla battering the end into a mushroom Censored
But will take a look.

That being said, I am looking at getting my breaks serviced and coated. I found these guys as an alternative (https://www.bcs-automotive.co.uk/) which may be worth considering. No idea how they compare, but do appear to have more paint options.
I think their turn around was quicker too, but maybe wrong (it was a while back I enquired) Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

R&G did a great job, the gearbox is noticeably smoother.

The contact is Dave Gregory ; https://www.randgautocare.com/ I rang on Monday and he fitted me in on Friday the same week. £ Very reasonable …. I was quoted twice as much from a place near Gatwick.

It takes some patience to find though as it was tucked down an alleyway. TDV8 4.4 2012

Dobbin gets to ride home !

So, my grand master plan to refurb the brake system went awry on Sunday; having had an advisory for ( minor ) brake pipe corrosion on the MOT in Feb I’ve been acquiring parts for a complete refurb of the brakes including refurb of the front 6 pots, replacement of the rears with OEM spec ones, new flex lines and discs all around and finally, replacement of the fixed lines with kunifer…… all of which costs a small fortune!

So I’ve been budgeting to get it all done in the autumn and then, on Sunday, the rear drivers side brake line fails at the top of the A3 on the way home,

For info I got a Brake fluid low warning on the dash well before I’d felt any noticeable degradation in braking performance and pulled in at the Wisley BP services to check it out.

I reasoned through trying to drive home as the system is split so that the fronts still operate with the rears failed but fairly swiftly concluded that on a fast road like the A3 with approx 60 miles home the likelihood of getting rear-ended or loosing the braking completely was quite high…. So the AA got a call.

3 1/2 hours later we were loaded and off home:

Somewhat luckily my local garage are willing to do the kunifer upgrade but the rest of the system is going to have to wait until the front calliper refurb is completed.

So the refurb will be two steps rather than one…… but at least we got home safely.

Motto of the story: don’t mess around with brake pipe advisories; get the job done pronto! & if you get a brake fluid dash warning pay attention to it as soon as you can stop in a safe spot.

Lesson learned! TDV8 4.4 2012
