4.4 TDV8 - Ol' Smoky

Hi

So th new FF has covered approx 1,600kms and amongst mixed observations I have noticed this is a real smoky car under anything but the lightest of throttle application.

When, for instance, pulling away from the lights and it revs to, say, 2,500 rpm there is a significant?? smoke haze left on the road perhaps exacerbated by following vehicles headlights. I haven't noticed it in the daylight (tend not to look in rear view when pulling away) but wondered if this is just diesel ownership (haven't had one before).

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Thommo

Hello There.

I could be put right by others (who know better) but I'm sure the TDV8 4.4 has carbon particulate filters in the exhaust silencers (as part of its emissions compliance) Exclamation

There should be no smoke (not even a whiff out the back).

I had a BMW 535d and now have a TDV8 3.6 and neither show(ed) any signs of smoke emissions Question

Although with the car being brand new it may (I'm guessing) take a while for the filters to be fully active (functional).

Worth mentioning to the dealer I think just in case but they may say let it bed-in Whistle

Hope this helps. Currently running FFRR MY10 TDV8 3.6L and a Disco 3 XS Commercial (tank like but very effective as a Company van). Plus one mint condition Track Day Car in the form of an E36 M3 3.2L Evolution circa June 1996 with lots of go faster bits and only 52k miles on the clock! Oh, plus a few bits to make it slow down really quickly as well! Luvverly.

My TD6 puts out no smoke - even under hard acceleration at night where you usually see evreything in the headlights of the people behind you (tested just the other day with a 5series BMW hanging off my bumper from 120 to 180 kph on the Autobahn :-p ).

The 2 TDV8's I have driven (one had roughly the same km's as yours) put out no smoke that I noticed either - nor have the ones I've followed, come to think of it. And as Kilovolt says, they shouldn't.

I'd pay a visit to the dealer...

Sorry to tell you but you have a problem with your car. The 4.4 has a DPF and no smoke at all should be emitted. Certainly with mine I haven't noticed any smoke except from the FBH on very cold mornings but that's from the side anyway.

Diesel Particulate Filter.
Most diesels have them to meet Euro 5 emmission rules.
Some people have issues with them and so remove or bypass them, but MOT are due for a change soon so Euro 5 vehicles will have stricter levels on the "smoke test"

Basically catches some of the nasty particulates that are bad for humans and then burns them off every so often.

Yes it will be warranty. Your vehicle is new so if it is a fundamental problem you may be able to reject and demand replacement.

I think your dealer may be right on this...I too notice smoke in the headlights of a following car during hard acceleration but never at any other time...the Rangie is running very well in all other respects...If it was me just keep your eyes to the front and forget what your arse is doing!!! Laughing
