Strange wind noise

I was driving home yesterday and I had a rear window open but front windows shut. When I reached a speed of about 45 mph there car started to make such an awful racket it sounded like I had a rear puncture. The sound was a very deep droning noise and vibrated the whole car. I flicked open a front window slightly and the noise stopped instantly. I realised it was wind buffeting into the car.

After that I experimented with various window openings. If either or both of the rear windows are open and both fronts are shut the buffeting is there. If I open either front window slightly it stops immediately. The wind was pressurising the cabin so much it was actually making my ears pop!

It isn't really a problem as I can't see many occasions when I will have my windows in those positions but I was surprised by the severity of the wind. I guess driving a car with the aerodynamic profile of a large garden shed at any sort of speed will displace a large quantity of air lol. I do have wind deflectors fitted, could this actually exacerbate the issue?

Anyone noticed this before? Just for a bit of fun, try it out next time you go for a spin, if is anything like mine you will be very surprised. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Most cars do this to a certain degree. Easiest fix is open the tilt part of the sunroof. Thumbs Up

Yes, I have experienced buffeting in other cars, this was something very load and extreme, I actually had to swallow to make my ears pop due to the pressure build-up. Im not worried about it but was interested that's all. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

It's in the manual on the d3, probably is in the FFRR manual too - if you experience buffeting because of a rear window open, you need to crack open the opposite from window
