Tow ball turned on in CCF

Help, l322 2007 tdv8...today I turned on the towing capability using GAP IID after fitting a tow hitch. Its confirmed as on in iid tool, but when hooked up to the tow board lights (which ì know work) nothing happens.

Is there a relay, or fuse that I need to look at next?

Thank you

I'm wondering what wiring you have. I fitted an original towbar and wiring to my 2007 tdv8 and the electrics were totally plug and play, no IID tool required. The wiring had a gizmo box in it. Trailer light on the dash comes on automatically when the trailer wiring is plugged in. I have no idea how aftermarket wiring might work.

Thanks, I have the whole plug and play package which includes the Siemens unit. It's wired to a 13 pin socket. I will next see if the connectors are live or not.
Update since my last post...fuses are checked ok..not sure if there is a relay...?

Hi,

I have a very similar sounding issue after fitting what I believe to be original parts for my vintage of vehicle.

See my post here: https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic66161.html

My issue is similar but when I plug in a test tool to check the electrics are working as they should it seems to conclude its all not.

I've been trying to work out if I have the correct "box" for my era of car as when fitting the tow bar (a Westfalia unit) I think it must have originally come off a previous model type. You'll see a picture of my Siemens box in my post so would be curious to know if yours has the same part number etc.

I never got any answers to my issue and to date have not had time to get around to dealing with it.

Be interested to know if you resolve yours as I might have a similar root cause.

Jon

Hi Stuart,

I wonder whether there’s a difference in the “magic box” (the white Siemens box) between the older 2005 models and the newer 2007 engines vehicles? Maybe the harness is pinned differently, given we both seem to have the same white box off an older version perhaps that could be at the root of it?

Hi Jon, i just had a quick chat with a local tow bar guy, he said to check that they are not LED's on the trailer board...they are not...then check the Siemens/BMW box. I also read that a poor earth at the 13 pin connector could cause all the issues, so had that apart and all seems good.

Im going to source a replacement harness and see how we go with that. I've spent a lot of time messing around with this https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_bigcry.gif and like you, I need to get it solved soon.

Edit: I'm going to get a 7 pin this time and avoid the 13, and see if that makes a difference https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_question.gif

keep you posted

Cheers
Stuart

Ok that's interesting as I had it connected to an "amazon" trailer test tool that displays an LED for each function selected (Reverse, turn right, left, hazards etc etc) but it wouldn't show the correct indicator for each function. Basically so you know it works before hooking up.

I'll try it out on a friends vehicle and see if it performs differently.

This is what I used:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Trailer-Caravan-R...d_source=1

It comes with adapters that (in theory) allow you to test on a 13 pin socket - can't actually remember what mine is Laughing

Also check there is no corrosion in your tow socket.

I had my Defender into a tow specialist as my trailer would not work. Turned out that the tow socket was all corroded (plus wired incorrectly) however with the corrosion it would have never worked Range Rover L322 (awaiting arrival)

So Jon, some news in that i went out and got a 2nd hand set up (see pics) towing loom. in pretty good shape after a clean. Took the original one out, and then inserted in the new, plugged in my tester (like your tester) and all is good. I then hooked up the trailer. This has been driving me nuts for weeks, not being able to solve the problem.

I cannot tell you what exactly the problem was other than the replacement is a 7 pin connector and the previous was a 13 pin. Seems it's now solved through replacement. The replacement is on the right in the pic.

I do hope that the reversing bleepers turn off with the trailer connected, something i've still to check!
Post note edit: they are all good, just checked:)

Hope you get a resolution to your non functioning soon.

Hi Stuart,

Thanks for the update, good info. Just to clarify is the white Siemens control box the same part number in the “new” part or different to the previous one?

I suppose you just sourced one on eBay or whatever?
