But, slightly more seriously, naysers of a different ilk risk polluting the genuine L405 data being accumulated in this thread, no?

My 2021 Ford Ranger is p*ssing oil out of its off-topic engine and its crankshaft may yet fail, but would I mention it on here?

I would encourage anyone who has had a failure on these engines in the US to submit a complaint:
https://www.nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem

I had a 2011 Cayenne S that had an almost catastrophic engine issue and did the complaint, as did many owners, and it became a recall.

It is a safety issue after all. Anything that disables a vehicle at highway speeds is a safety issue.

Based on this thread it would seem that TDV6 crank failures are not as common as you would believe based on the noise on the internet about them. I would have expected to see far more reports of failure on this thread, but great to see that is not the case.

@DrF:

At my last service in April, my local indy LR specialist could hardly move vehicles around their 6-bay workshop for new crated Ingenium engines waiting to go into busted vehicles, so they said.
Not sure if it’s crankshafts or other terminal issues? Our own 2016 Evoque HSE 2.2D was totally faultless over 3 years, not one single issue.

Again, being my usual pedantic self, we are in danger of going OT on this thread, where it seems the tumbleweed speaks volumes against the desktop mechanics preaching TDV6 crankshaft woes.

I feel cheated as an adrenaline junkie, having only purchased a TDV6 for the expected sudden thrill of a snapped crankshaft, only to find myself a victim of Internet bullsh*t. :censored:

My reading of your results is that rule of thumb is 2:1 of aluminium to silicone and you're below this limit, so is not of concern yet.

Cranks are forged steel though. The aluminium, to me, signifies cylinder head wear ‐ either piston or cylinder walls, which wouldn't be unexpected on a 10 year old vehicle. I think this may also explain your elevated level of oil dilution, but still low soot level.

Does the oil test not provide an analysis report? I have seen some before which give an expert opinion based on the result.

If the car runs fine and you don't get issues with blow-by etc, I'd keep up with the oil changes and test again in 5,000 miles. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
