Hi, yes that is more or less it. An old number plate makes a good base and Velcro to hold it in case you change your mind!
I used silicone adhesive for the plastic surround ( more numberplate)
One thing I have changed since my post; I decided to hardwire the audio connection to the 3.5mm socket in the back. I read an article that demonstrated that a wired 3.5mm connection is always better quality than Bluetooth.
So my iPhone connects to the CarPlay screen by Bluetooth but the sound is wired to the 3.5mm socket. Obviously select aux on the audio menu on the car. It’s very easy to hide the cable.
It makes connection much more reliable also not having to double connect to Bluetooth.

You might want to search out a post detailing a very neat modification to the rear aux which allows a lead to be plugged in permanently and the lid to still close.
I remember it , but sorry can’t just find it at the moment.

Not much trim needs to be removed. You can feed the power cable ( and the aux) under the dashboard and pick it up in the front corner.
I removed the vent and trim (10 min job)
Then the 2 bits of trim in the footwell and you can take the power direct to the fusebox. The audio cable can hide behind the trim and tuck it behind the trim on the transmission tunnel.

Baltic blue; I would be interested in the wiring mod to tidy up the 3.5mm socket.

I’ll keep searching, but basically you just need a 3.5mm aux extension lead with a 90’ plug on the end that plugs into the socket., meaning no modification to the existing car wiring.

Ok took the plunge today and removed the centre vent, and ran the wires down to the fuse box.

Need to wait for a piggyback mini fuse to arrive to power it up and test.

Still need to cut a plate to cover the hole!

It’s a bit involved as have to remove the upper dash..

I know that I have read a post detailing a very simple mod to the rear aux socket, but have not managed to find it using search.
It uses a 90’ plug and involves drilling a hole , putting a grommet in it and threading the lead through it, which then allows the lid to be closed on the rear aux socket unit.
It’s very annoying knowing it exists, I even planned to copy it myself, but ever got round to it.

With regard to modifying the rear auxiliary socket (2006-2012 L322s) what I've done in all of mine is remove the plastic cover below the flap which conceals the auxiliary port and power point.

Once removed the underside of the auxiliary port is accessible but covered with another plastic piece which can be removed by removing 3 torx screws (long thin torx driver required, I cannot recall the size)

The circuit board containing the auxiliary port can then be removed from this plastic and your cable plugged in.

I then wrapped the circuit board in electrical tape and placed it in the recess below the center console.

This will leave you with a hole where the auxiliary port once was. Cut a small piece of Black plastic and secure this over the hole from the underside (I used two small dabs of superglue so it can be easily pried back off if desired)

Now refit the Black plastic trim piece and your done.

With the mod completed when you open the Black plastic flap and all that will be seen is a neatly blanked off auxiliary port, almost as if the car didn't have one from factory!

So with thanks to madnessgonemad I’ve finally done mine:

Covered the top plate with matching black leather, however it’s a bit thick so might need some more trimming

All fully reversible if I get tired of it !
