Corrosion on Scottish L405's

There seems to be anecdotal views and some old threads on the subject but does anyone have close experience, rather than bloke down the pub said experience, of secondhand L405's that have lived their life so far in Scotland being more corroded than a car that has lived mostly down south?

Anyone bought a Scottish soured L405 and then found corrosion problems?

Personal thoughts having read a lot about it on this and other forums is its less of an issue now that maybe it would have been 20 years ago but myths persist once they are established.... Like I say looking more for hard experience than further regurgitation of hearsay Very Happy ----------- Current Garage --------------------

My L405 spent its first 7 years in Cupar and Edinburgh and apart from the fuel tank cradle the underside is in remarkable condition. I'd be more worried about a car that lived by the seaside.

I’d say it’s more whether it drives on gritted/salt roads. Mine came from North Yorkshire and I would say it looks like it it’s lived round my way all its days ( on the Clyde … so does get salt sprayed from time to time in bad weather as well as the salted roads in winter ) V8 or else ...

Mine (MY17, 65,000 miles) has had the following corrosion issues:

Galvanic corrosion to bolts behind/around headlights under bonnet

Parking sensor failure due to delamination of surfaces, some rear ones replaced twice

Aluminium strip across tailgate replaced twice

Corrosion under door handle paint

Corrosion of bolts under flap between body and lower tailgate

Corrosion of rear anti roll control pipework (expensive as rear subframe needs to come off to replace)

The towbar armature (farmer's hitch) is really rusty, the anti-rattle bolt needs to be replaced periodically as it rusts solid and the hole for the pin needs to be filed out to allow the pin to locate.

Some of these occurred during the warranty period and were covered by LR. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Given the bodies are bonded together, I have no idea how to repair

Alu wleding isn't as straight forward as traditional MIG welding

We have a customer who buys cars from London and brings them up here. They are an absolute joy to work on Rolling with laughter

For the rear subframe mounts I would think Tig welding would be best but you will need to find an experienced welder who is willing to weld aluminium upside down, it's not easy...

When I looked to pre-empt my rear subframe removal I found a few mobile guys doing Tig welding

I expect we will see someone doing it soon on here....

I've just bought one of these to wash it off regularly underneath during the salting of the roads...

Was just reading up about tig welding and that it’s not recommended for cars due to the huge RF noise it generates and that TIG is best when parts are removed or not connected to the car. So you fall back to MIG welding.

I have a dread that mine will be as bad as some of those pictures so I’m already thinking around what would I do to fix it. V8 or else ...

Weird, I've seen Tig welding on lots of cars, maybe there is a work around for it...

Mig tends to have a larger weld pool so is probably even harder than Tig welding to do upside down...

We need some first hand experiences. Thumbs Up Pete
