P0741-00 Torque converter clutch solenoid fault

Good morning everybody,

I’ve recently purchased a cheap l322 3.6 to restore. It been running great apart from a intermittent torque converter lock clutch solenoid fault.

Fault will usually happen when in 4th gear when in regulation mode. When comparing engine and turbine speed there is a definite speed difference in both.

When in locked mode there is no slip and both speed match and no flare when driving.

So far ive changed oil and filter, luc solenoid, but the fault is still present.

There are no other fault code with the box.

Im thinking the torque converter is on its way out.

How much slip is there supposed to be in regulate mode.

In controlled-slip mode in 4th gear the engine speed typically leads the turbine speed by 3-4%, with full lock-up in 5th & 6th gears.



This is equivalent to a maximum friction power of around 2kW (up from 1kW for the 5HP24)

Hi phill thanks for your reply,

So ive been monitoring the engine and turbine speed with the GAP tool.

Ive not managed to get the exact speed when the fault occurs because its to intermittent, however its more common to happen when climbing a incline with steady throttle in 4th gear.

Usualy the rpm difference between the engine and turbine can range from 50-100 rpm when in regulate mode, i have however seen a difference upto 200rpm difference in regulate mode. When in locked everything is ok. I have noticed some small flaring when pressing the accelerator traveling at normal speed. When cruising though its fine.

Also under hard hard acceleration there definitely a groan coming from the center front area.

For what it’s worth, I think you’re taking exactly the right approach to diagnose your issue. The controller is flagging that the lock-up clutch is sticking and failing to lock when requested. You’ve changed the fluid, filter & EDS 6 solenoid.

As an intermittent fault, it’s going to be very challenging monitoring the engine and turbine speeds so that you catch the exact moment the fault occurs and, like yourself, I suspect ultimately that you may have to have your torque converter re-manufactured to solve the issue.

Your Y94 converter features a captive clutch which requires specialist skills & knowledge to accurately re-weld the LUC piston retainer back into the correct position. Companies such as JPAT, Sussex Autos and (local to you) Mackie Transmissions have the necessary equipment and know-how and can re-manufacture a torque converter for a lot less money than a new one. I believe that Sussex Autos charge around £300 for a re-manufactured Y94 converter. Past experience tells me that Mackies will probably charge a lot more.
