This happened to mine too. In my case I heard something tiny (maybe a spring or small plastic piece?) fall off and drop to the bottom of the pillar.
However, with a bit of patience I was able to gently manoeuvre the top cover piece into place and it felt as if it gently popped back into position. If I were to push it backwards I think it would quite easily do what yours has done again but as I never adjust it I'm happier to live with it (it looks perfect and stays in position) than to dismantle the whole pillar cover assembly and risk the inevitable damage to clips etc. that almost always result in rattles.
