Deployable side steps switched off

My side steps appear to be non responsive, they are showing as off on the display but when you switch them on they go back to off straight away.
One is out and one is in.
Dealer had it for a service and it was all fine when it went in but there was no one in service in Saturday when I collected it so had to take it.
Is there any way to switch it on without a dealer plug in? 2018 L405 Autobiograpghy

I have looked through a lot of those but nothing relates to a 2018, only thing of interest was the tr2 knob was referred too... What's that? 2018 L405 Autobiograpghy

That's the Terrain Response dial - next to the gear selector - it should be down - when you press it, it pops up.

On mine, IIRC, there's a steps button by the drivers right knee, above or below the boot open button. Holding that in whilst you switch on the ignition turns the steps on & off

Oh right of course... mines down... Mine is a 2018 so I dont have the button by my knee, on my main display I can turn them off/on set roof access or off road mode, problem I have is they are switched off and when I press on, it goes off after 2 seconds and wont stay on, no fault codes logged.

I cant manually deploy with my diagnostic either, says ECU unreachable that makes me think its been turned off like delivery mode... 2018 L405 Autobiograpghy

ECU unreachable sounds like either a faulty steps ECU, a loose connector or a broken wire in a loom somewhere.... I wouldn't really know where to start Confused

I've not watched it, but this guy has done an installation video, so I guess that will show you where the wiring goes, so that you can at least check the connections ?

He has the early model 2016 onwards, which are different the modules are on the left side of the spare wheel as opposed to the right side in the early ones, and there is also no control button on the lower dash

the later models are only controlled from the dash in format system Big Cry

It could be a fuse in the rear right side of the boot area check in your owner's manual.

otherwise, it could be a stuck motor or damage to the brackets. 2017 SDV8 4.4 silicon silver AB

Fuse was ok, I spoke to the dealer as it happened when they had it in for a service, they are collecting it and taking it back in to sort it as it's their fault.

My diagnostic reader says ECU unreachable see so I think they have in initialized it and it's gone off line. I'll report back once they resolve it, at least it's not costing me money, well diesel for the two hour trip back to the dealer but hey ho... 2018 L405 Autobiograpghy

Almost certainly not relevant to this situation but FWIW

I always set my steps on roof access when I clean the car (in the screen option) and the steps pop out. Once the car's done I switch roof access off and the steps stow away. On a minority of occasions, about 30% of the time, they then won't operate, just stay permenantly stowed. I've tried various ways to get them active again and the one that always works is to press the Terrain Response dial so that it raises, and then just push it down again. The steps then work normally again. Mike - MPx

Just a thought. Did the dealers do any kind of software update or reset ( maybe had the key security update ) if so if they reset the ccf files. It knocks off the side steps. If so easy fix to switch back on again. Hopefully dealer will help and sort.

It went back to the dealer and when they sorted the steering column calibration they lost the connection to the side steps ECU. All sorted now after they turned it back on. They even put some fuel in the tank for me.. 2018 L405 Autobiograpghy
