Engine removal

In my ongoing saga, the engine has to come out. The workshop manual implies you need to remove the gearbox first. Really?
I checked the TDV8 manual and it implies it there as well.

Do you have to remove the gearbox first, or can you simply remove the engine leaving the gearbox alone? 2010 5.0 SC Autobiography Overfinch in Bentley Silk White pearlescent, 22" Overfinch wheels with 285/35x22 tyres

My tdv8 is in the middle of having the turbos replaced among other maintenance. I dropped the whole front subframe, engine and transmission as one unit.

What are you trying to fix?

Gearbox out first does make it easier to work around the engine for removal

Given that the bellhousing bolts all have to come out anyway, it's then only propshafts and cradle off to remove the box anyway, it's not a huge amount of extra work Thumbs Up

I have a bad piston. It is not the case of simply dropping the sump. The engine has to come out to do that. 2010 5.0 SC Autobiography Overfinch in Bentley Silk White pearlescent, 22" Overfinch wheels with 285/35x22 tyres

I have done 2 engine removals in the last couple of years (5.0 Supercharged) and can confirm that it is not necessary to remove the gearbox first.
