In my ongoing saga, the engine has to come out. The workshop manual implies you need to remove the gearbox first. Really?
I checked the TDV8 manual and it implies it there as well.

My tdv8 is in the middle of having the turbos replaced among other maintenance. I dropped the whole front subframe, engine and transmission as one unit.

What are you trying to fix?

Gearbox out first does make it easier to work around the engine for removal

Given that the bellhousing bolts all have to come out anyway, it's then only propshafts and cradle off to remove the box anyway, it's not a huge amount of extra work
